Who Cut Off Van Gogh's Ear?

...'Van Gogh's Ear: Paul Gauguin and the Pact of Silence' contends Van Gogh and Gauguin got into an argument over a prostitute named Rachel outside the brothel where she worked. Gauguin, an excellent fencer, drew his sword and cut off Van Gogh's left ear.

"The left ear fell. We cannot say if it was deliberate or an accident. In this situation, the protagonists vowed to keep silent. Then Gauguin disappeared, abandoning his friend," Kaufmann said, according to the Daily Mall.

Gauguin, according to the book, dumped the sword in the nearby Rhone River. Van Gogh handed the severed ear to the prostitute and then staggered home, where police found the injured artist the next day. Van Gogh did not give the police any information and ended up letting them think he had mutilated himself.

Gauguin kept silent because he didn’t want to face charges and Van Gogh didn’t tell because he was infatuated with Gauguin, the book says...

The cultural and political icons of the Left were, almost without exception, very nasty people in their private lives.

Bad people tend to promote bad ideologies. Why? Because they're attempting to justify their sinful lives. Paul Johnson makes this case very well in his book, "Intellectuals."

Oh fer crying out loud.j

YOu are saying Van Gogh and Gaughin were liberals?

I am far less concerned with who cut off Vincent Van Gogh’s ear than with the individual who put a knife into Theo Van Gogh’s chest. THAT’S the thing we need to worry about.

Van Gogh? Political? Who knew.

You did know he produced a number of works of art that continue to be widely sought after.

It's after the ear cutting event that he appears to have had what used to be called "a mental breakdown". He went to an asylum. He got out. He went back. Eventually during the period when he was doing the "Crow" paintings (he did several) he managed to shoot himself.

Leftwingtards believe he commited suicide out of an inability to deal with existential angst. Others think he had an accident due to his failure to take proper firearms training from local experts.

You be the judge.

Tycho lost his nose in a sword duel during his college days in Germany, apparently in a similar dispute. (I suspect his chaperone got into some trouble over this. He was a noble Dane sent to Germany to study along with a chaperone to keep him out of trouble. He was supposed to be studying the law, but actually “majored” in astronomy.) He was buried with his silver nose.

I'm saying that they are icons of the Left and Modernity. Because their ugly art was/is anti-realist, it is celebrated by the Left. The Left is anti-rational, as is modernity.

You can add them to the list of pathetic modern "artists" like Picasso.

"Degenerate Moderns"
"Living Machines"

People widely seek after cans of poop produced by modern "artists." Why? Becaue they're hoping to sell them tomorrow for more than what they paid for them today.

No one likes or wants modern art. It's a giant speculative bubble. So many wealthy people are invested in it, that they can't afford for the bubble to collapse. But when it does, when someone finally shouts, "the emperor has no clothes," the bubble will collapse, and I will be laughing my butt off.

I have seen Van Gogh paintings in real life and they are wonderful. They are different from what was done at the time and he was not accepted by the establishment. Too bad he didn't live to see his later popularity. I never cared for Picasso and the moderns who came after him and abstract leaves me cold.

Good grief.

Van Gogh and Gauguin and Picasso are more than icons of the left.

YOu have a somewhat limited view of art. ANd modernity.

It was an accident. The two quarreled, Van Gogh drew his sword and something fell to the ground. The two of them stooped over to examine it.

"What's this ear?" Van Gogh was heard to remark...

Thanks, I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip the waitress.

Photos do not come close to portraying the glowing color infusions in Van Gogh's collections. I prefer his pre-1888 works to the more stark pieces of his final tortured years.

There is a Dali museum in St. Pete. Dali's got some interesting holograms. Otherwise, I find most of his works bizarre.
