Meet Charley the (climbing) "Spider Cat"
The Sun (UK) ^ | 5/18/09

AMAZING climbing cat Charlie scales up a TWO-STOREY building to get into his home. The tomcat has stunned locals as he fearlessly clambers up the side of his house.

His gravity-defying antics have earned him the nickname “Spider-cat”.

The seven-year-old has now become something of a local celebrity among neighbours in Denny, near Falkirk.

Owner Hannah Smith said today: “Charlie meows at the front door to be let out. So we let him out but no sooner is he let out than he wants back in.

“But if no one hears him at the front door, he then wanders round to the back of the buildings to find the balcony.

“He then climbs up the balcony to get in. So Charlie really goes out the front door and in the back door.”

Ms Smith added: “I got him as a wee kitten and out of the litter Charlie was the one that looked most mischievous (snip). He’s certainly lived up to his reputation.

“I think it is totally incredible how Charlie is able to climb up a roughcast wall. I’ve seen cats climb trees but I’ve never seen a cat climb a wall. It’s amazing.”

Spidercat, Spidercat,
Climbs wherever the food is at
Climbs a wall, any size,
Catches thieves just like flies
Look Out!
Here comes the Spidercat.

Is he strong?
Listen bud,
He's got radioactive blood.
Can he swing from a thread
Take a look overhead
Hey, there
There goes the Spidercat.

In the chill of night
At the scene of a crime
Like a streak of light
He arrives just in time.

Spidercat, Spidercat
Friendly neighborhood Spidercat
Wealth and fame
He's ingnored
Action is his reward.

To him, life is a great big bang up
Whenever there's a hang up
You'll find the Spidercat!

When I was sleeping in the upstairs master suite at my present house, Mister Krookedtail would sometimes refuse to come in before bedtime, then climb a tree next to the porch and walk over on the porch roof to one of the bedroom windows and demand to be let in by banging the window screen.

If I didn't let him in, he would jump back over onto the tree, then climb back down, turning around and shinnying backwards down the trunk and wait until morning by the front door. He learned the trick from the older cat I had when Krook came to live with me and K.C. Cat.

Krook will also bang the cabinet door where his favorite canned food is kept, if I don't put that out for him occasionally instead of the dry food. He's taught Goosecat to beg that way, too.

When I lived in a two story condo with K.C., I had a wooden pole from the second story balcony to the ground for him to use as his 'escalator'. He would slide the door open in the bedroom and descend the pole to roam the neighborhood. I never did get him to close the screen after himself though ...

Every cat I know becomes paralyzed like that when some joker puts on an outfit or a harness. Cracks me up!

You deserve to have that made into a song and then awarded a grammy.

I wish I could take credit. You've really never heard the Spiderman cartoon theme song?

You can hear it Here.

I've had a couple of cats but only things they truly excelled at were 20 hour naps.

Great pets though. Cats really have minds of their own.

Krook also learned the broken meow method of meowing from K.C. ... when he wants something, he meows really loudly, in a broken output which, when combined with opening and closing his jaw, sound eerily like he's trying to make sentences! He got me out of bed this morning with that loud yowling then led me to the door to let him outside.

My last cat, Brutus, had a similar "broken meow". He would start to meow, but then stop and pause for several seconds, with his mouth still open, and then finish off the meow.

Brutus also would "buff" your door with his paws running up and down the surface of the door when he wanted you to let him in or out. He would never, ever, meow. He was the only I've ever seen who consistently took that approach. It was almost meowing was "beneath" him. Weird.
