‘John Wayne is the United States of America’

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of John Wayne. To honor this great man, National Review’s John J. Miller has put together a terrific tribute. I was very pleased to be asked to contribute along with Andrew Klavan and our very own Leo Grin, Michael Long, Andrew Leigh, Andy Levy, S. T. Karnick, and others. I urge you to check it out.

It was Maureen O’Hara who said “John Wayne is the United States of America,” and that he was. Honorable, generous, brave, selfless, aware of his own flaws… The great thing about being a John Wayne fan is that he survives all attempts at deconstruction. His timeless work obviously speaks for itself, but the man himself has withstood the toughest of all critics, time. John Wayne doesn’t disappoint.

And one of the gun manufacturers have come out with the John Wayne specials collector guns. They’re beautiful.

I don’t think The Duke would care for the direction this Country is headed.

I love this guy...my father, who is now dead, looked and acted so much like the characters the Duke played that people would comment on it often. I watch the Duke when I miss my father.

John Wayne lived by the code of the west:
Code of the West by James P. Owen
1. Live each day with courage.
2. Take pride in your work.
3. Always finish what you start.
4. Do what has to be done.
5. Be tough, but fair.
6. When you make a promise, keep it.
7. Ride for the brand.
8. Talk less and say more.
9. Remember that some things aren't for sale.
10. Know where to draw the line.
I wish more did so.

Maureen O’Hara is still living. Talent like hers and Wayne’s are sadly missing from the movie scene today.
My six Wayne favorites:
1. RED RIVER
2. HONDO
3.FORT APACHE
4.SANDS OF IWO JIMA
5. STAGECOACH
6. RIO GRANDE

How about The Searchers and The Quiet Man?

One of my favorites is The Wings of Eagles. It's the life story of Frank 'Spig' Wead, one of the original naval aviators who later wrote screenplays for John Ford.
