ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A Palm Coast man bitten by a snake at Wal-Mart on U.S. 1 South in St. Augustine Tuesday afternoon is in critical condition after having a bad reaction to antivenom medication.
According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office report, a pygmy rattlesnake bit Jeriel Joiner, 27, on the hand as he reached under a display of ferns to retrieve a baby bottle that had fallen.
Witnesses said the snake was still on Joiner's pinky finger when he pulled his hand out.
Jeremy Robshaw of St. Johns County Fire-Rescue said firefighters arrived at the garden center of Wal-Mart at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and took Joiner to Flagler Hospital for treatment. He was then transferred to Shands, where he was in the intensive care unit at midday Wednesday.
Joiner told Channel 4's Vickie Pierre that his hand has swollen to the size of a baseball glove.
Firefighters confiscated the snake and positively identified it as a pygmy rattlesnake.
One of the few American made good to be found in Wal-Mart these days.
didn’t this also happen a few years ago?
snakes... (shivers!!!)
“Rattlesnake on aisle 3.”
What is this, Daily Kos?
Lawsuit in the Garden Department
The article didn’t say (as far as I saw) but was the display outside or inside?
First thing I thought - I thought someone had bumped an old thread
From whom did they confiscate the snake? The victim, Wal-Mart, a bystander? Another dumb as a stump reporter.
It's like "racist" incidents on college campuses. Nowadays, almost all of them are committed by minorities who don't think enough attention is being paid to their racial grievances.
Plants are “outside garden”.
The poor man.....PRAYERS!
“Jay Richitelli says he is the third Floridian in three years to be attacked in a Wal-Mart by a pygmy rattler. “
Rattlesnakes are really really numerous this year in south Georgia and north Florida for some reason.
I know four of our nieghbors have had to kill a few around their porch area (which scares the dickens out of me when my kids are playing outside) and a boy my son is friends with showed me the pic on his cellphone of a SEVEN FOOT RATTLER he killed with a shovel last month.
I also saw a picture on email of a seven to eight footer in Valdosta.
I don’t recall there being that many or that large in my whole life.
Cottonmouths or Water Moccassins, yeah. But tree rattlers weren’t this numerous this far north.
An online article says he is the fourth person to be bitten since 2006 in Florida stores. Remind me never to go to Walmart if I’m in Florida.
This is the fourth time since 2006 in Florida Walmarts.
