Lewis Hamilton clocked the quickest lap of the day during the second practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

McLaren's world champion left it late with a lap 0.047 seconds faster than team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, who had topped the morning timesheets.

A low-key day for Brawn's Jenson Button ended with the championship leader posting the 13th fastest time.

Red Bull's championship-chasing duo Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were fourth and sixth fastest respectively.

Kovalainen was running with a new diffuser and front wing in Hungary and he was quick to make the most of the updates which gave Hamilton's car a performance gain of about 0.8 seconds a lap in Germany two weeks ago.

He had the chance to make some waves in Germany. Look forward to seeing the practice session tonight.

Is this one on Speed or is it still the Fox broadcast season? DVR will pick up either but I’ve found the post-race interviews get clipped on Fox.

Please don’t post with the results listed to an event many of us working class have yet to see. Thanks for ruining the surprise. The only plus will be I’ll be watching the BBC broadcast of practice instead of the crappy commentary over at SpeedTV.

Thinking about it, I’m really fucking pissed off because I know that many people here at FR F1 posting have asked a zillion freaking times not to post results in a title. Just one more reason why I spend less and less time here. Thanks again.

Q2 was marked, however, by a heavy crash for Felipe Massa at the 130mph Turn 4. The Brazilian was struck on the helmet, possibly in the chin, by a metal spring which is believed to have broken from the rear wing of Barrichello's Brawn. Knocked instantly unconscious, Massa straight-lined the grass on the inside of Turn 4 before, with no input on the steering wheel and no braking, slamming into the tyre barriers. Felipe was transported to the circuit medical centre by ambulance with his helmet still on before being taken to hospital by helicopter.

After an obvious delay to start Q3, the world was left without the knowledge of who has taken pole position as a rare timing system occurred at the Hungaroring. With each car containing its own delta system plus a backup in operation, Alonso was eventually confirmed as pole winner alongside Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull. Mark Webber will line up with World Champion Lewis Hamilton on Row 2.

Dear asshat:

Please assume some personal responsibility and avoid calling for the censorship of the free expression and exchange of ideas between others

It is not the fault of others if you read something here that you don't want to read

Personal responsibility is one of the basic tenants of a Conservative website

... and I genuinely like the guys on SPEED, despite my personal preference to avoid the socialist broadcasting of the BBC

Formula One driver Felipe Massa 'in life-threatening condition' after freak crash in qualifying

Brazilian Formula One driver Felipe Massa was fighting for his life tonight following a crash during a qualifying session that knocked him unconscious. Massa was airlifted to hospital where surgeons operated on him to treat a fracture to his skull.

The Ferrari driver ran over a piece of debris, thought to be a spring, on the track during the qualification session for the Hungarian F1 Grand Prix in Mogyorod near Budapest, Hungary.
