Wow. 20 races. And aren’t the Russkies angling for a race, too? I worry that F1 will overeaching like Nascar. Like Nascar they also appear to be abandoning their roots by limiting the races in Europe. I like the idea of rotating some races but it shouln’t be limited to Europe. They should rotate all of them on an18 or 16 race schedule. Make a North American swing 3 of 4 years.

Metallica to headline at F1 Rocks™ in India

Rock aficionados are in for a treat at next month’s 2011 Formula 1 Airtel Grand Prix of India after organisers announced multi-award winning USA heavy metal band Metallica are to headline the inaugural F1 Rocks™ in India concert.

Metallica, formed by guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich in 1981, are the seventh-biggest selling act in American history and have received 21 prestigious international awards, including nine Grammys.

The band has released a total of nine studio albums, but this will be the first time they have played a live show on the Indian continent. The concert, which is expected to attract up to 30,000 fans, will be held at Leisure Valley, Sector 29, Gurgaon on Friday October 28, ahead of India’s first F1 race at the new Buddh International Circuit on the Sunday.

“We are so excited to be playing a show in a place we never thought in our wildest dreams we’d get to play,” said Metallica. “It’s an honour for all of us that we get to be a part of that whole music scene as a metal band sharing our music with fans in India at this incredible concert!”

Robert Montague CEO of F1 Rocks added: “We are very pleased to announce Metallica as our headlining artist at the first ‘F1 Rocks™ in India with Vladivar’ event and proud to welcome our title sponsor Vladivar and broadcast partner MTV India. It will be a spectacular weekend of fast cars, style, celebrity, glamour and very loud music and F1 Rocks™ The Afterparty will once again round off the weekend’s entertainment.

“What F1 Rocks™ is doing is ground breaking and we are pleased we are becoming a regular fixture at Formula One events, bringing world class music artists together with the world’s greatest motorsport, and a broadcast package that will be distributed to over 50 million viewers worldwide. Together with our commercial partners we look forward to staging a memorable and successful live event for music and motorsport fans alike.”

Just watched Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix again yesterday – the backdrop is the ’66 GP season - the year F1 jumped the engines up from the 1.5 liters

If you haven’t watched in a while do so again …. Greatest racing film ever made and none will ever be made again like it …. Monaco, Spa, Silverstone, Watkins Glenn

Be sure to watch all of the special features on the DVD

The four stars who play the leading drivers in GRAND PRIX— James Garner, Yves Montand, Brian Bedford and Antonio Sabato actually do their own driving in the film's thrilling competitions. World-famous "Grand Prix" drivers who appear in the picture include 1962 world champion Graham Hill, Jack Brabham, world champion in 1959, 1960 and 1966; five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio (1951, '54, '55, '56 and '57), 1961 world champion Phil Hill and the following: Chris Amon, Lorenzo Bandini, Jean Pierre Beltoise, Bob Bondurant, Joakim Bonnier, Ken Costello, Nino Farina, Paul Frere, Richie Ginther, Dan Gurney, Dennis Hulme, Tony Lanfranchi, Guy Ligier, Bruce McLaren, Michael Parkes, Andre Pillette, Teddy Pillette, Peter Revson, Jochen Rindt, Jim Russell, Ludovico Scarfiotti, Jo Schlesser, Skip Scott, Joe Siffert and Mike Spence. Acknowledged as the world's largest spectator sport at the time, auto-racing was probably the only truly international competition. Consequently, the four leading actor-drivers are American, French, English and Italian. The leading oriental star Toshiro Mifune portrays a Japanese racing-car designer and manufacturer. The feminine leading roles are played by American stars Eva Marie Saint and Jessica Walter and French songstress Francoise Hardy, making her English-language acting debut.

Twenty-two racing cars formed major elements of the GRAND PRIX arsenal, together with a caravan of mobile machine shops and equipment carriers. The cars included four Ferraris, four BRMs, three Lotuses, four McLarens, two Brabhams and one American Eagle. Two camera cars, a Ford G.T. 40 and a Shelby Cobra 7-litre, used both for photography and in the direction of track scenes, were capable of traveling even faster than the racing cars themselves. Utilizing mounts on both front and rear, the cameras on the Ford G.T. 40 were controlled by remote-control television monitor within the two-seater occupied by Electronic Camera Operator John Stephens, with drivers Phil Hill and Bob Bondurant chiefly alternating behind the wheel. Another key tool was the Sud-Aviation helicopter, specially adapted for aerial photography with a Nelson Tyler mount and lightweight camera equipped with zoom lens.

Three to five weeks of photography took place at the various locations, all centering about actual race circuits where GRAND PRIX races were being held. In most cases, production supervisor William Kaplan had separate production staffs under his command in the respective countries involved. The races filmed with up to 18 separate cameras were: Monaco Grand Prix—May 22, Monte Carlo Belgian Grand Prix—June 12, Spa British Grand Prix—July 16, Brands Hatch Dutch Grand Prix—July 24, Zandvoort Italian Grand Prix—September 4, Monza A French Grand Prix race was staged exclusively for the film in the first week in August on the 1965 Grand Prix track in Clermont-Ferrand. Although dramatic scenes revolve about the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, the American Grand Prix at Wakins Glen, New York, and the Mexican Grand Prix in Mexico City, the races themselves were not needed for the continuity of the screen story.

Wow, thanks. Brought back lots of memories.

I and two other buddies had been planning to go to the Hockenheim race, but the lousy weather persuaded us to forget it. I was stunned when I heard Jimmy Clark was killed. He was my (and most everybody else’s) hero.

In 1970 I saw the Formula 1 race at Hockenheim, won by series leader Jochen Rindt.

A few weeks later we headed to Italy, considered the race at Monza, but hurried to visit relatives, instead.

That was where Rindt was killed. He was my racing hero.

Thanks for the link, Chode.

F1 coming to the East Coast!!! Evidently live announcement tomorrow on SPEED....

New Jersey set to host F1 race in 2013
ESPNF1 Staff

New Jersey will host a Formula One race in 2013, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

Earlier this year the townships of West New York and Weekhawken announced their interest in bringing F1 to the city, with plans for a street race set against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. The circuit will start in Weehawken at the beginning of JFK Boulevard East and go north before turning right down 60th street in West New York to River Road back towards Weehawken.

The latest report says an announcement is due on Tuesday which will see the race hit the streets in June 2013.

The reports suggest the New Jersey race will run alongside the US Grand Prix in Austin, which is set to make its debut on the calendar next season.

In August, the mayors of Weehawken and West New York released a joint statement saying the race would be privately funded, with Leo Hindery Jr, a former chief executive of the YES TV network, reportedly leading the group of investors.

“In these uncertain economic times when every direct and indirect revenue source is vital, our own Formula One race could be a very positive boost to our citizens,” mayors Richard Turner and Felix Roque said in a joint statement last August. “This said, we need to ensure that the financial benefits from the privilege of having these races in our towns are equitably shared and that no tax dollars are used. The investor group has already told us that our towns would be substantially compensated annually.”

F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone has been in talks with various promoters to bring a street race to Greater New York over the years but the plans have never reached fruition.
