Will I be able to use text messaging (SMS)? What is the price for that?

I know someone who has this phone, and qualified for it by being, essentially, poor. They get a certain number of minutes each month (100 something), which roll over I believe. If you need any more time, you have to purchase prepaid minutes, not sure about the rate. I think Tracfone probably makes money on this deal, because most people would fly through those 100 some odd minutes in a week. Its a way of getting these phones in the hands of (probably) irresponsible people who don’t budget their money right in the first place.

Most cell phone companies offer pre-paid wireless which is a much better option for people with bad or no credit.
The minutes technically don't roll over, you have to use them within a 90-day period, although if you keeping buying cards, the minutes don't expire for a while.

Good point. Tho’ eventually, it’ll be like trying to boycott anything that’s made in China. Impossible, unless you own a small farm and factory. Then you’re basically working for the government, so go figure.
You have to figure out about how many minutes of usage you need per month, then compare the companies and rates to see which one comes out best for you. http://www.cellguru.net/prepaid_compare.htm has a nice chart.
For me, Tracfone is not a good value, but I know some people who swear by it, but they only buy minutes when they are on sale and using various coupon codes online.
The plan is actually quite of a contribution to society. Against what a few may claim, the phone is not, the Obama administration is not responsible for the program. It started well before president Obama was even elected. From what I understand, it is only available to individuals who are on welfare or recieve some support from the government. It provides 60 minutes of talk time and a free phone and charger. This program is great because it provides just the basics in case of emergencies. Hope this program keeps going because it is a worthy program. Just my 2 cents.
