Here is a cheesy little video I made a few years back when I was selling some tube testers on ebay. You can see one of my first ham rigs if you look close, it’s an old 6v6 oscillator on a piece of varnished board...all of 3-4 watts CW on 80-40mtrs. Put the tiny plate and filament supply right onto the board, neon bulbs for tuneup indicators....silly thing still works fine....best contact was 2600 miles.

You are right, not much power on am at 540khz. I meant to say high end, it can be useful to be able to broadcast local am on 1500-1610...sort of a local emergency station.

A guy just never knows what might come so be prepared.

Also, you can buy 7watt FM (88-108)transmitters for 50.00 on ebay and use as a local emergency station...price includes shipping.

Experience with the HF, long range stuff includes antenna tuning, amplifier (500+ watt) tuning and operating, different modes including keyboard to keyboard modes like RTTY and PSK31 ...

Yes, most of that would be foreign to me except for the antenna tuning.

But I am talking only 'bout a 2m handheld here. Have a good 12th!

I have my radio shack all tweaked, tuned and humming along.

I, too, have envisioned a time to come when my beautiful radios, amps and mics will be as essential as gasoline, food and ammo.

The Bencher with the clear plastic paddles is sitting just to the left of my beer. I had to look close to see it myself...

“Barsoom” is Edgar Rice Burrough’s name for Mars

So that goofy pic from the NASA flybys would be...

The Face on the Barsoom Floor.

Thanks for that link. Lots of good info on it, some of which I had seen before but also some new (for me) info.

Tubes. Almost all the Ham gear I've had in 31 years is solid state, but my first HF rig was a Yaesu FT-200 (more commonly branded as the Tempo One) and I still have it.

While dusting off all my gear earlier this year I put the old dog on the air and dang if it don't still work great. I'm going to spruce it up some & sell it. I would like to get hold of a nice Kenwood 530 or 830.

Hi William,

My Magnum S-3 10 meter mobile amateur transmitter just came from FedEx moments ago. My head kind of exploded when I read in the instruction manual that I have to study and take a test.

I had romantic notions from two of my favorite time travel movies, Ditto and Frequency, that all I would have to do is just fiddle with the knobs and press the talk button. Darn!

I wouldn't be doing this if Obama wasn't president. I could have used the money to buy myself a replacement food processor.

Thanks for this tread. I need it!
