6,000 people died crossing US-Mexico border: rights group AFP/Washington More than 6,000 people were killed trying to cross the US-Mexican border illegally in the past 15 years, the American Civil Liberties Union said yesterday. The ACLU urged the North American neighbours to declare a humanitarian crisis in the area, protect human lives and change policies that have led to an increase in the number of people who die trying to make the illegal move. “The current policies in place on both sides of the US-Mexico border have created a humanitarian crisis that has led to the deaths of more than 5,000 people,” said Kevin Keenan, Executive Director of the ACLU of San Diego. “Because of deadly practices and policies like Operation Gatekeeper, the death toll continues to rise unabated despite the decrease in unauthorised crossings due to economic factors,” he added. The ACLU data were from the Mexican foreign ministry. It says 6,607 people died trying to cross the border since 1994. US Homeland Security officials have put the figure at 3,861.

It's a start but we aren't gonna solve the problem with numbers like that.

I thought ours was a nation of laws. Why aren’t we enforcing the laws? If we enforced the laws there would be fewer attempting to break them.

Whaddya think of that ACLU?

So, as a United States Citizen concerned for the life of others and see the detrimental, unarguable result of those people crossing the border, I say we must stop allowing this tragedy, by closing our borders and making them impermeable, by raising a secure wall and discouraging the continual killing of thousands, by enticing them with such low secure borders. It must be done to save the lives of thousands!!!!

It’s not America’s fault that they made a “choice” and it didn’t work out. “Choice” isn’t always good. They should have applied to come here the way normal people do. We’ve got laws. Yeah, I know. The aCLU hasn’t a clue about laws or the U.S. Constitution. They are just a bunch of failed, whinyass lawyers who use threats and intimidation to get their way in our so-called “courts.”

Eliminating the danger invites more lawlessness.

So the answer is to take control of the border. People can enter at the legal and safe ports of entry. Since they are coming in legally, they’ll be coming in with all rights, covered by all labor laws and all the protections that legal status brings with it. No more dying in the desert, no more dying locked in a shipping container abandoned by your coyote.

Makes a lot more sense than having people traipse through the desert, dying, only to live and work under the table, unprotected by law.

Control the border. Its the humanitarian and right answer. And, its the law.

I’d feel better if it was 0 because it would mean millions of mexicans aren’t illegally entering this country in the first place.

Not nearly enough, land mines and machine gun posts would get the body count up to immensely.

Simple solution

Make illegal border crossing profitable

GO SOUTH my illegal immigrant and find a job but not in the USA

Southbound workers may find a job

Northbound workers need to find nothing/nada/zilch. GO HOME
