yes, that is true but sometimes just for no reason at all your IP addie can poop out and it can be tricky to fix that by yourself. When this has happened to me i call the HELP DESK at the company where I buy my i-net service and they re-set it.

Plug everything back in, power it up and see if your local network is working. Try opening a file on Computer B while sitting at Computer A. If that works odds are your router has died. We have had 3 die on us already and brand name doesn’t seem to matter. Right now we are using a Netgear but we have had a Linksys and 2 D-Links die on us. We keep a wired Linksys around as a backup in case the wireless dies so we can at least still have our internet.

You can ping 127.anything even if you don’t have a network interface card installed. That’s the loopback, it doesn’t use the physical network.

Your suggestion is a good one.

Many routers have a small reset button that needs to be accessed with a paperclip.

If all of these recommended tests fail, he should just buy a new one. Routers do sometimes give up the ghost. I’m on my 3rd or 4th over about a 17 year time frame.

Unplug your ethernet's electrical cord and power down your computer. Turn on your computer and after it powers up, plug in your ethernet and turn it on. Check if you can get online.

As the other post said, do check if there's a reset button, the type you have to stick a paperclip end into. Call customer service for your internet if that doesn't work.

I’m on like my 4th or 5th router. They seem to have a short shelf life. And, I’ve tried many brands.

This is the second router.

did you unplugit, take out the batter and wait ten seconds before putting it back together?

That does it for mine.

I was thinking more along the lines of the DC power supply getting weak or going bad. If you have a volt meter, you could see if it’s putting out the correct voltage.

When you unplugged it, did you also take out the battery?

It was very well hidden. I pressed the reset and was able to get back the local network but not the internet. I then powered down the cable modem and removed its back up battery. After a minute I connected the power and rebooted the cable modem. Both computers are now able to find the internet.

Thanks everyone for your help.

The token probably fell out when you messed with the cord; check under your desk.

Yes. I finally found the right combination to fix everything. Push the reset on the router, then cycle the power on the cable modem.

You wanna hear weird?

This internet wifi went out everytime the phone was in use.

Turned out to be on the same frequency. Learn something new everyday.

Once I had a problem I noticed the vable guy connected it to the wire and went to a certain URL and did something... it worked after that. It was all numbers. You can probably google the make of the router and something like “reset” or whatnot.

But I usually turn unplug it and take out the batteries for fifteen seconds and then see how long it takes the wireless to work again.

OK, here is the sequence

1. Unplug the cable modem connection from the router and run it directly to the computer, you should get the icon in the lower right hand corner indicating network connectivity
2. Attempt to get on the internet as usual, worst case you may have to reboot but if it works you are focusing on the router now
3. Reconnect the router as it was cabled initially and locate the reset switch which is typically small pinhole next to the power plug in the back of the unit.
4. With the power on using a paperclip press the reset button for 30 seconds, the lights on the from of the router will go through a series of on and off and then stabilize with the LAN (or similar)light on solid, flashing indicates the unit cannot sync with the signal coming in from the cable modem which you verified in step 1 and the router is the most likely suspect piece
5. If you cannot get on the Internet go to your browser and type in 192.168.1.1 and see if it pulls up the Router management screen, usually the login is blank and the password is admin
6. If you get the setup screen you are now talking to the router directly, usually in the first screen it asks if you want to use static IP or DHCP, choose DHCP unless your provider has instructed you to use static. If you are not sure choose DHCP and then save the settings, and once it returns attempt to go to an Internet site as usual
7. If your problems persist in getting attached more than likely the problem is the router, go back to directly wiring from the cable modem to your system and then go and get another router

Message me back if you have any other questions

Could be the modem or cable. I had all kinds of trouble with my router pooping out..It is the Apple air port extreme. The problem was not my router but a series of crappy modems. Finally a new modem and new cable were installed and things have been fine since. This powering down and going through that trouble shooting is fine but when it comes and goes nearly every other day it is something else. Good luck.

A couple of times a year, my network stops working, usually unplugging for about a minute then letting it reboot fixes the problem.

I’ve never had a cable go bad without something physically damaging it, worth checking though.

I have had routers go bad after a few years, it may be time to upgrade. I had what to me was an expensive router die after 2 years. I wanted to wait until n was out so I bought a $25 g unit with plans on upgrading when it died, that was 4 years ago, I may have to drop something on it to justify purchasing an upgrade.

I connected directly from the cable modem to the computer via an ethernet cable.
