Prominent Houston attorney John O'Quinn was one of two men who died this morning when their SUV slammed into a large tree on Allen Parkway after the driver apparently lost control, police said.

"I'm stunned. The community lost one of its biggest assets," said Rick Laminack, who worked with O'Quinn from 1987 until 2006. "He was a great lawyer who shared a lot of his wealth with people who needed help."

O’Quinn, who made his fortune largely in personal injury cases...He also was a prolific giver to Democratic Party candidates...

Making his name in handling plaintiff’s litigation, among O’Quinn’s biggest wins were:[3]

- $1 billion verdict in 2006 against Wyeth Laboratory for its diet drug, fen-phen
- $17.3 billion tobacco settlement for the state of Texas
- $100 million for silicone breast implants made by Dow Corning

In total, O’Quinn is estimated to have won $1.5 billion for the firm of The O’Quinn Law Firm of Houston, Texas. According to a 2006 article in Forbes, O’Quinn’s own firm had pending cases against stock brokers and hedge funds for shorting the shares of weak companies, and against Ford for rollover accidents caused by the Ford Explorer.

The trial lawyers are the vehicle the leftists use to enforce the over-regulation of business by obtaining obscene monetary awards.

These days, the only things that are ‘unsafe at any speed’ are the would-be tyrants in Washington.

Since he owned two papal vehicles, I’m guessing he was Catholic and fairly devout. Why else would he bother with a Ford Escort?

Catholics used to be wholly-owned by the Democrat party. That’s changing, but some people never will.

The tobacco settlement was one of the biggest scams. I can’t find figures right now as to just how much they basically got per minute.

It was political payback for Democrat contributors. The top donors in the states are trial laywers.

And suprise surprise surprise, the only element of healthcare cost not controlled by Obamacare.

It looks like he’s another example of the true source of most liberal wealth - stealing it from the producers at the end of the government’s gun.

Texas tobacco settlement held up over attorneys’ fees
May 8, 1998
Web posted at: 9:29 p.m. EDT

DALLAS (CNN) — The $15.3 billion dollar settlement between the state of Texas and the tobacco industry is being held up because of a dispute over attorneys’ fees.

When the settlement was announced earlier this year, Texas Attorney General Dan Morales said the state would pay the lawyers it hired to handle the lawsuit a 15 percent share of the settlement — $2.3 billion.

Gov. George Bush, along with seven state legislators, the state hospital districts and a candidate for attorney general, filed a motion contending those fees were excessive and asking a judge to set them aside.
