New wife and I are looking to upgrade our old, worn out top loading washer and dryer. We are in a new house now, and I noticed a gas hookup in the laundry room.
Do any of you have experience, comments, and recommendations on the following issues:
1) Working with Sears for purchase and installation;
2) Front end loading washer and dryers;
3) Gas dryers.
Any suggestions, comments, etc. would be appreciated.
Got rid of our old washer and drier 6 months ago. The washer was still okay, but the drier motor was shot. After 20 years and relatively low prices (economy and all) figured to buy new. A few cheap self-repairs sure kept the old guys running over the years.
I don’t see that happening on my new front-end loaders. Lots of expensive and complicated stuff it seems like. I hear that the HE detergent is also required as the regular soap somehow gets into the seals with the bearings and can ruin them. I hope I can get 5 years out of them (Whirpool Duet) before they go bad.
Friend and I both got our duets about the same time. In casual conversation, the mold smell came up. Now, when we run towels/whites through, we use the sanitary cycle. That and leaving the door open seems to have solved the prob. Still wouldn’t trade mine. :)
Kids put so much in mine, they tore the springs that hold the drum up right out of the drum. Evidently it’s a known prob b/c Whirlpool already had an extra set of holes in place.
Wow, I apologize, but these questions just exceeded my pay grade. :)
I know she uses Cheer HE regular powder, but Im not sure about washing in colder water.
I will ask her about it and respond tonight.

Oh no! LOL I don’t think mine completely did laundry til they were taller, but they started folding and putting away when they were pretty young. Aren’t we good Moms? ;)
I have not tried the sanitary cycle, is that the 2 hour one? I just never want to spend that much time!
I will anxiously await your report! :)
I’ve always used the whitest whites cycle on my Duet for whites and use warm water.
Me too though we can’t use Cheer makes hubby itch.
Good moms....yeah, that’s it! LOL
I got fed up with my 3 leaving clean clothes lying around their rooms and putting them back in the dirty clothes hamper still folded. I showed them the washer and dryer, said this is where you turn the knob to, use this much soap, when the washer is done, put them in the dryer. If your teacher fusses about you wearing dirty clothes, YOU can tell her why!
Yeah, the sanitary cycle is the long one, but my towels don’t smell musty anymore. :)
HMMM never thought about the over loading of it. I seldom have the whole thing full since there are just the two of us. Could be part of the cause some have truble with them while others don’t? I bought the Duet because I wanted to never have to go to the laundromat again for washing sleeping bags,my king sized down comforter, and quilts. It does an excellent job on the comforter and takes little time to dry. I think I need to invest in those little dryer balls to help fluff it while it dries but I keep forgetting to buy them.
Just talked to the Mrs. and she confirmed that I doesnt completely
dissolved in cold water but does clean good.
She alternates between hot & cold loads.
Also she uses Tide HE , not Cheer
She also wants me to get some on the job training so I can answer
the soap questions from experience.
I’ve heard reports that front-loading washers have problems with mold in the door around the rubber lining. I prefer the toploading washers. And my washer and dryer are both electric.
I’m going to try it. I have thought about using it for dog towels too. And next time I have puppies... ;)
Thanks, I’m going to try that. I just always look at 2 hours and think...no, I want to be done with laundry before then! ;)
That’s funny, my husband and one of my boys were allergic to Cheer as well. And Whisk. Of course I haven’t used them in a zillion years so I’m not sure if they are now.
I think you can put an old tennis shoe (clean!) in with the comforter to fluff it. Of course it’s noisy! ;)
LOL I’m going to remember that. I haven’t used dry detergent in forever. I do like to use OxyFresh on whites tho.
If you’re doing 3 loads a week instead of 3 a day, it doesn’t matter if one of them takes 2 hours. :)
I guess....I generally do about 3 or 4 loads in one day, but I only do that once a week. But, sometimes I stretch it out to a couple of days. It’s nice only doing laundry for 2 people, I remember when the boys were little it was a constant thing, and was almost never actually finished, especially when they were in diapers!
Never finished... how bout it? I can only wish I’d had my front loader when the kids were little. It would have made my life so much easier!
