All I can tell you is that I am not alone.

I've bought the cleaning mixtures and nothing has helped.

I miss clean-smelling laundry.

I have front loading washer. And matching dryer.
They are on pedestals. They do an excellent job. I do not have a mildew problem. I can add a piece of laundry without waiting ‘minutes’, but it takes maybe 10 seconds. If you or spouse have a back injury or trouble bending I would not suggest these types of washers and dryers. The pedestals raise them of course, and give you drawers to keep detergent, fabric softener etc in. But again, you have to bend over. I have seen some now, that have the drawers on top. And you do not have the laundry folding area a washer and dryer that is not front loading provides...They definitely save on water and energy and detergent and fabric softener. You do not have to buy the expensive ones. Just low sudsing detergents!

Have Whirlpool Duet series. LOVE them. Will never go back to a top loader again. Have had a few probs, but mostly b/c the kids want to overload. Wish I had gotten the platforms, will next time. Mildew smell can be a prob, but usually vinegar will take care of it. Five years, and mine run like a Chinese laundry—all the time.

You can still buy the platforms. I love mine. Much easier on my back too.

we also bought the Fisher/Paykel.....so far so good...we have the wrinkle free dryer...the washer qualified for an energy credit from the electric company and we’ll get to use it on our taxes I think....and its a top loader that uses less water....a little spendy...

Yes closing the door when the washer is not in use causes mold to grow. What is there to differ when site after site and my users manual says that it does cause it? Also if you use regular detergent and don’t buy the HE detergent it is also a known cause of mold in them. I have had mine for 4 years with zero mold problems but then I followed the manufactuers directions for care.

Not true. They make HE liquid detergent that is fine to use in a front loader. IN fact you have to use only HE detergent whether it is power or liquid otherwise that is what you get from both.

I have done all those things. He. Keep the door open

There are class action suits about this.

Whirlpool is one of the targets.

I bought the Whirlpool Duet front loader washer & dryer from Lowes in July 2008. I absolutely love them. My daughter has the LG red pair and highly recommends them too. We both bought the pedestals for them to sit on.

What target are you talking about? I have had zero problems. I do run the cleaning cycle every month like the manual suggests and do the rest of the things suggested by the manufacturer. I find it strange that a small percentage have a problem but there are many owners like me who would buy it again because they are so pleased with it?

Love mine too. Leave the door open when not in use and you have no problem with mold. Clothes seem cleaner too.

Have a forty year old Maytag. Over it's life probably haven't spent over $200 in parts and maintenance. Now on it's last legs. Fast forward to these days. My brother's Maytag started rusting around the detergent fill after only 3 years. My neighbor has to do major maintenance to his Maytag every couple of years. They aren't what they used to be.

BTW those of you who like the top loading washers might want to make sure to buy one in the next few years to replace he ones you have now. I heard that the enviromentalists are busy working on outlawing those in the USA.

Are we going to keep saying the same things back-and-forth to one another?

I tell you I do all the things you're supposed to and still have the smell, you tell me all the things you do and don't, then I tell you I do all the things you're supposed to and still have the smell, you tell me all the things you do and don't,I tell you I do all the things you're supposed to and still have the smell, you tell me all the things you do and don't,I tell you I do all the things you're supposed to and still have the smell, you tell me all the things you do and don't,I tell you I do all the things you're supposed to and still have the smell, you tell me all the things you do and don't,I tell you I do all the things you're supposed to and still have the smell, you tell me all the things you do and don't.

Gets kind of boring, don't you think?

Well then stop it.You are the one that keeps raining on the parade. Most people are very happy with their Duets I have no idea why yours is having a problem. If this one ever stops working on me I’ll buy another. I know several other people who have the same Duet as I do and none of us have had a problem.

Just replaced an 18+ year old Whirlpool top loader (not by choice)with an LG front loader, and we love it! We’ve had it 3 months now and so far no problems. One of the selling points for us was the 10 year warranty on the direct drive motor.

Whirlpool did a survey a few years ago to try to find out how wide spread the problem was and found that it was less than 1%. NO I am not a washer salesperson but I don’t think it is fair that one of the less than 1% can come in with dozens of happy owners and make it like every single one has problems. There is one more suggestion for those who live in humid areas and that is to reach in and dry the seal after each load. Once that seal is molded there is nothing to be done to get rid of it other than replace the seal, you know that right?
