Ex-Air America CEO Blames 'Darwinian World' of Market Forces for Failure of 'Progressive' Talk Radio

The former CEO of Air America, Danny Goldberg, has been kind enough to provide us with some comedy entertainment in an article, Air America Radio, RIP -- It Didn't Have to Be This Way. Actually, Danny, it did have to be that way due to those market forces at work that you castigate. However, we all owe you a vote of thanks for coming up with several incredibly lame but laughable excuses to explain away the failure of Air America in particular and "progressive talk radio" in general.

First the donor quality excuse:

Democracy Radio folded in 2006 as a result of a lack of financial support from progressive donors.

Some blame bad management for the failure of both Air America and Democracy Radio, and since I spent one unhappy year midway through Air America's life as its CEO I suppose I am one of a dozen or so who are in that category. But if progressives really wanted to address talk radio they could have started competing companies with different management. Instead, most of the monied progressive community did the opposite of their conservative counterparts and bought into the notion that media should stand or fall based on media market forces.

Almost right.

Where they lost was in the marketplace of ideas.

Liberal radio failed due to market forces, so it needs help.
In other words, since no normal sane person would waste 1 minute listening to liberal radio, government should step in and subsidize liberal radio.

This comment from the original article sums it up best.

“Why would any ‘progressives’ listen to ‘Progressive’ Talk Radio when most can watch a plethora of ‘progressive’ TV news?”

So market forces are extremely powerful and no amount of Liberal yapping can make them bend to your will.

Please let Obama know about this before he does something stupid.

But long-term political ideas have a more complex and uncertain creative path. Conservatives understand the need to focus on both long- and short-term political communication. Or maybe media advisers and consultants who advise labor unions and an assortment of progressive groups on media strategy are culturally uncomfortable with the crude language of AM talk radio and other mass culture, or are nervous about losing control of their "message."

Translation: Liberals on the radio simply don't lie convincingly.

PJ I think you even saw the same things I did on this subject when trolling leftist boards. Many of them asked why a business needs donors. They also thought it was stupid.

At least they changed their mantra as to the reason of AAR’s failure. They used to say it was because that their management didn't have people who understood radio. No. They had management who either didn't understand or care about reality.

The whole thing was a scam to funnel money to pay back liberals like Franken. I'm sure a few made money off of this whole failed experiment.

Air America failed because it ran out of Boys & Girls Clubs to steal from.

Funny, but aren’t these the guys that have the Darwin fish on the bumper of their Volvo? Now they don’t like Darwin? Shoosh, who knew. I thought they were all committed to the church of the primordial ooze that created them randomly from matter.

It is funny that these people who firmly believe in Darwin’s theories are the first to expect congress to step in with a fairness doctrine or some form of wealth redistribution to protect the ones that Darwin said would be the first to go. Did Darwin predict the leftist(commie) U.S. Congress ?
