HAPPY CATURDAY TO AMY’S PLACE!

Gus - The Theatre Cat - a poem by T S Eliot

Gus is the Cat at the Theatre Door.
His name, as I ought to have told you before,
Is really Asparagus. That's such a fuss
To pronounce, that we usually call him just Gus.
His coat's very shabby, he's thin as a rake,
And he suffers from palsy that makes his paw shake.
Yet he was, in his youth, quite the smartest of Cats--
But no longer a terror to mice and to rats.
For he isn't the Cat that he was in his prime;
Though his name was quite famous, he says, in its time.
And whenever he joins his friends at their club
(Which takes place at the back of the neighbouring pub)
He loves to regale them, if someone else pays,
With anecdotes drawn from his palmiest days.
For he once was a Star of the highest degree--
He has acted with Irving, he's acted with Tree.
And he likes to relate his success on the Halls,
Where the Gallery once gave him seven cat-calls.
But his grandest creation, as he loves to tell,
Was Firefrorefiddle, the Fiend of the Fell.

"I have played," so he says, "every possible part,
And I used to know seventy speeches by heart.
I'd extemporize back-chat, I knew how to gag,
And I knew how to let the cat out of the bag.
I knew how to act with my back and my tail;
With an hour of rehearsal, I never could fail.
I'd a voice that would soften the hardest of hearts,
Whether I took the lead, or in character parts.
I have sat by the bedside of poor Little Nell;
When the Curfew was rung, then I swung on the bell.
In the Pantomime season I never fell flat,
And I once understudied Dick Whittington's Cat.
But my grandest creation, as history will tell,
Was Firefrorefiddle, the Fiend of the Fell."

Then, if someone will give him a toothful of gin,
He will tell how he once played a part in East Lynne.
At a Shakespeare performance he once walked on pat,
When some actor suggested the need for a cat.
He once played a Tiger--could do it again--
Which an Indian Colonel purused down a drain.
And he thinks that he still can, much better than most,
Produce blood-curdling noises to bring on the Ghost.
And he once crossed the stage on a telegraph wire,
To rescue a child when a house was on fire.
And he says: "Now then kittens, they do not get trained
As we did in the days when Victoria reigned.
They never get drilled in a regular troupe, And they think they are smart, just to jump through a hoop."
And he'll say, as he scratches himself with his claws,
"Well, the Theatre's certainly not what it was.
These modern productions are all very well,
But there's nothing to equal, from what I hear tell,
That moment of mystery
When I made history
As Firefrorefiddle, the Fiend of the Fell."

Amen to your prayer for baby Brooks, KM.

So many tiny little ones in need of prayer to overcome dangers and impediments to their good health. May God bless and be with them all, and their families. They are in my prayers.

Awwwww. are those Border Collie pups?

My dear departed Torey (RIP) was a Border Collie.

But she was part Jack Russell terrier. She had the Brains and Brawn of the Border and the Craziness of the Jack.

So she was a Jack Border Terrorist.

I LOVE Border Collies, but they are almost TOO SMART to be Dogs.

If they had opposing thumbs, they could take over the world.

Old Ironsides

AY, TEAR her tattered ensign down!
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon’s roar; —
The meteor of the ocean air
Shall sweep the clouds no more.

Her deck, once red with heroes’ blood,
Where knelt the vanquished foe,
When winds were hurrying o’er the flood,
And waves were white below,
No more shall feel the victor’s tread,
Or know the conquered knee; —
The harpies of the shore shall pluck
The eagle of the sea!

Oh, better that her shattered hulk
Should sink beneath the wave;
Her thunders shook the mighty deep,
And there should be her grave;
Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every threadbare sail,
And give her to the god of storms,
The lightning and the gale!

How I Almost Started War with Belgium
Back when I lived in Boston, I had the privilege of serving as Activities Chairman for a Motorcycle Club headquartered at the Harley Dealership near Boston, MA.

As the club grew, it became time to take a picture of the entire group, so we took all the bikes down to the Navy Yard in Charlestown to have our picture taken in front of the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned vessel in the US Navy, known as "Old Ironsides".

At the next pier was a small vessel from the Belgian Navy that was visiting on a NATO mission. The sailors were very excited to see the Harleys and were milling around the bikes, admiring them.

One very cute sailor asked me in broken English if i would give him a ride, and he hopped on the back of my bike. I immediately sped off and took him on a three hour Harley tour of my beloved City of Boston.
(I knew every street and alleyway because I had been one of the original Marathon Bicycle messengers, but that's ANOTHER story!)

As he hung on for dear life in his foreign navy uniform, flipping off the drivers who were cutting us off and honking horns at us (typical Boston drivers),
we were a sight to behold. Middle aged, overweight, leather-clad female biker driving teenage foreign sailor around town, who was making naughty gestures at all the drivers.
It is a wonder we weren't arrested. But we were having so much fun sightseeing that we lost track of time!

Meanwhile, the captain of the ship was interrogating the rest of the crew as to WHERE the young sailor was, as he had not even had permission to leave the ship, nor had he his passport, or any other documentation on him, and I had, in effect, kidnapped him, in a foreign port and taken him to parts unknown!

The entire club stayed at the ship until we arrived, innocent and exhilarated by our ride. We thought we had only been away about 15 minutes, when actually we had been gone over three hours! When the club and I explained what had happened and that the sailor really had no control over the situation, we gave everyone rides on the backs of the bikes around the huge parking lot to cement the deal that the sailor was indeed forgiven.

And that, my friends, is how a bunch of Bikers saved me from what COULD have been an International Incident!

The Locket

It was tarnished and old with a broken clasp.
I tossed it into the drawer.
Why did my mother give it to me,
And what would I want it for?

She said I liked it long ago
When it was shiny and new.
But why she thought I'd like it now,
I really wished I knew.

The years passed by, and my little girl
Was going through my things,
Slipping bracelets on her arm
And trying on my rings.

“What's this?” I heard my daughter ask
As she held it for me to see.
“Why, it's just an old locket,” I replied,
“That your grandma gave to me.”

“Oh, Mommy, isn't it beautiful?
It's shaped just like a book
With pages you can turn inside
And pictures...Oh, look, Mommy, look.”

I saw it then through a child's new eyes,
What I should have seen from the start,
The reason my mother treasured it so
And wore it close to her heart.

Now when I'm tempted to look at the surface,
Discounting what's broken or old,
I think of the locket all tarnished outside
With an inside of purest gold.

I am glad we did not have to go to war with Belgium over that.

It would have been all my FAULT.
