I have a theory about that!
My uneducated theory is that the berserker gene is alive and well in the red haird peoples of the british isles.
The phrase “get your irish up” is a modern day vestige of the berserker phenomenon...by my way of thinking.
If someone could go back in time and witness actual viking berserkers, my theory is that they would be largely red haired individuals and that they would be an over representation in the rape parties that tormented the british isles after the viking battle incursions onto the coasts of great britain.
Just a hunch.
PS, I love red haired women. I myself am not red haired, but i do have a redish beard...and as I age, my eyebrows and my sideburns are turning red.
dam i love red haired women!
Dad was visiting one time and sat next to the kitchen window. He had forgotten to shave his head for a couple of days and I saw this pink halo and told him I now believe he has pink hair....he cussed and said he forgot to shave his head for a couple of days...
OK, I am blonde, Norwegian(-German) but I definitely carry that gene, front and center. Our friend, a Norski, does too, as does our son. All blondes. My husband, a blond Icelandic sort, does not.
Interesting theory tho, and I suspect there is truth in it.
When we were in Northumbria, the B&B owner looked exactly like my large-boned Norwegian grandfather. I know the Vikings landed right there.
Red Hair is also a Neanderthal marker.
