KFC's Bacon Sandwich On Fried Chicken "Bread" Starts Killing People Nationwide April 12
The Consumerist ^ | April 2, 2010 | Chris Morran

Posted on 04/04/2010 6:00:57 AM PDT by Daffynition

Last August, we wrote about the "Double Down," a mysteriously tempting (and potentialy lethal) new food item being tested by KFC. For those coming late to the story, it's bacon and cheese sandwiched between two pieces of fried chicken. And now, many months later, I'll finally be able to get my hands on one.

KFC announced the decision to go live with the Double Down yesterday, but we weren't sure they weren't playing a April Fools gag. But no, they truly are going nationwide with the delicacy on April 12.

The sandwich will be available in two forms. The Original Recipe sandwich will set you back about 540 calories, 32g of fat and 1380mg of sodium. The not-as-bad-for-you Grilled Double Down totals 460 calories, 23g of fat and 1430mg of sodium.

Yep, Luther Burger was the orginal many years back. Now it seems many are onboard with their version. The Atlanta Braves now own the rights to the name ‘Luther Burger’...

Over in Corbin, KY, they tried to force the secret out of the Colonel’s statue when they stole it, but it was a waste of time. Probably stuffed it with those chicken livers...

Should also be big around the blackjack tables, but they’ll probably outlaw it in Vegas along with the card counters.

If KFC wasn’t so stupidly overpriced I’d try one.

There will be buy-one-get-one-free coupons for them.

That makes KFC just overpriced, as opposed to outrageously overpriced.

My daughter told me about this food item with the overtones of horror in her voice. After seeing this photo of it, I can understand why. It looks absolutely disgusting. Who would use two pieces of chicken as if they were bread? Good grief, this “sandwich” is too much.

May I suggest you never buy one or consume one? People are free, up to this point, to buy and eat whatever they wish. If this sandwich proves unpopular it will go the way of other fast food items that proved themselves unpopular. Until then, happy eating to all of those that want one.

I am an absolute chicken lover, when I was younger I rode with my dad who was a delivery driver to all the chicken fast food restaurants in an area in NE Texas, same chicken goes to KFC, Popeyes, etc.

So everyday I had a free chicken breast lunch.

Nowadays though I avoid those same fast food chicken outlets and instead I have a choice of several supermarkets that make their versions, at half the price.

But here’s the rub. Now that we have socialized medicine and our tax dollars are going to pay for others insurance, it does become our business what other people eat. That is the real evil of socialized medicine. Now everything becomes everybody’s business. And it leads to eventually having a bunch of “Stasi” informants.

Yesterday for lunch I had Sonic's Chicken Club Toaster -- a slab of chicken breaded and fried (much like one of the two chicken pieces portrayed in the KFC Double Down), crispy bacon, and enough of it you could actually taste it, melted cheese, mayo on the thick Texas toast, which had some kind of lube used on it as well, though it's called a toaster, the bread appeared grilled to me ... they add lettuce and tomato on the sandwich, the veggies don't detract from the taste.

As you can see, I survived consumption -- and it was delicious!! Really looking forward to this Double Down from KFC!

Though since the chicken is breaded, it won't pass the low/no carb tally, but otherwise, someone like ME, who does use all kinds of things as *bread* because I must control carb intake -- I've at times had a cheese sandwich consist of a slice of cheese between two pieces of bologna, mayo included, I've used large iceberg lettuce leaves to sandwich off-the-bone turkey breast, a good helping of bacon, sliced tomato, again, mayo included.

Eggplant makes a great *bread* substitute, grilled slices to make a hand-held lunch munching. Live a little, you'll never know how good something is until you actually put it into your mouth.
