I've never heard of it in any other volcanic eruption - ever.

"I've never heard of it in any other volcanic eruption - ever." Actually it quite common for lightning to be seen in volcano eruptions. There is even an ancient account by Pliny the Younger of seeing lightning in the volcanic plume when Vesuvius erupted and destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Yes, it is common. Simple static electricity--you have a moving mass of extremely fine dust, with particles rubbing against each other and knocking electrons loose.
It's no less eerie when you know why, though. Just consider a God who can control all that power. We can't.

I've never heard of it in any other volcanic eruption - ever. Such photos appear after virtually every volcanic eruption involving expulsion of ash (as opposed to lava).

.
This is how explosions occur in combustible dust e.g. grain dust in grain silos.

Yes, it is.I thought that statement in the article was odd when I read it.
I agree with you. We pretty much understand the logic and reason and physics behind the existence of lightning in an erupting HOT cloud, especially one containing large amounts of water vapor.
I bet the author doesn't even know what blue sprites are. Or umbrella lightning.

There's a great picture of Thorgerthur Thorkellsdottir on her farm in Eyjafjallajokull. My geologist buddy who has been there took a look at it and said "yeah, they have a lot of that there." "Basalt?" I sez innocently. "Consonants," he replies.
Great pix. Thanks for posting. BTT

NATO really should fly in and air-drop some vowels on those poor people. They’re obviously suffering from a critically low supply.

Some time ago a volcano in Colombia erupted and photos of lightning in the eruption clouds were posted on FR. Someone most know where they are. Very similar look to this one.
