Vanity- Looking for a TV series on DVD to begin watching. Any suggestions?
5/24/10 | Alienand stranger

I don’t watch TV, but I own a few series on DVD that I watch in order to avoid commercials and to watch on my own time.

I’m looking for something that doesn’t insult my spiritual or political (Christian Conservative) beliefs. And I don’t want comedies that exist on juvenile sexual innuendoes.

I love and own the first five seasons of LOST and THE OFFICE. I have the first two seasons of 24, but quit when I saw that the producers are too cowardly to depict Muslim terrorists not backed by white corporate types as the bad guys. I also have BAND OF BROTHERS and the first 10 seasons of THE SIMPSONS.

I was thinking of getting the first season of SCRUBS except I’m uncomfortable watching with my 16 year old daughter because of the frequent sexual situations.

I heard good things about CHUCK.

Any suggestions for a series I can get into?

I’m on my 22nd viewing of the entire Sopranos series. Actually it’s just on in the background in my workspace.

I hear DeadWood is very good.

I'll put in another plug for the older UK series - which are on Netflix.

Foyle’s War (already mentioned)

...and, if you want more action, muskets and swords...

Sharpe's Rifles

In a more documentary fashion, the “Seven Up” series is a fascinating look into class and values over the years. The same set of kids from different backgrounds are interviewed every seven years to see what is happening in the lives. I think they are now in their 40’s... Again, on Netflix.

I liked it a lot too, though the format paled after a while, then they all got very old and it got grotesque.

Here’s one few may know: after doing the Irish show ‘Father Ted’ (not recommended for the spiritually strict), Ardal O’Hanlon starred in a sitcom set in a British provincial town where he was an alien superman with a peabrain. He marries a local nurse and they have a brilliant son (in the cradle, he dispenses more wisdom than the rest of the cast combined). Pretty silly but a ton of fun and played brightly by all. I think there’s only a few seasons of it, but I found it utterly innocent and loverly.

Northern Exposure — 110 hour long episodes that represents, in my opinion, the best written show in TV history. Great characters, great setting, great stories. When nothing looks good coming up on TV, I reach for my NX DVDs.

Horrific language and sexual situations that simply go beyond the pale. I would not recommend ‘Deadwood’ for the poster of this thread by any means (despite the fact that it is superbly made, excellently acted). It is just deplorable morally, however.

From the era of great television: Emergency and Adam 12. For a little more humerous: Hogan’s Heros and I Dream of Jennie.

Check out “Dead like me.” Only two seasons were made, plus one movie after the series was canceled.

Battlestar Galactica. Very spiritual (pro God) message.

though I get somewhat uncomfortable with the awkwardness of the setups in a fine romance. Dame Judi is excellent in both...

Agree on both but Susan Penhaligon has been a favorite since I saw Leopard in the Snow. (and I forfeit my man card admitting that I saw that movie)

King of Queens
MASH
Monk (though some of the episodes are a little edgy, not for under 14, IMO)

My parents are currently hooked on 24. I’ve never seen it.

Yeah, I re-read the original post and Deadwood wasn't a good suggestion. One of the best series I can ever remember seeing, tho.

Did anyone suggest Band of Brothers?

And I haven’t seen Sons of Anarchy mentioned yet either, but there aren’t very many episodes to watch yet.

I would recommend “Mad Men” on AMC, but it has significant sexual content, which, according to your post, is an ender.

You can pre-order HBO’s “The Pacific” and the History Channel’s “America: The Story Of Us”. Both are outstanding.
