Vanity- Looking for a TV series on DVD to begin watching. Any suggestions?
5/24/10 | Alienand stranger

I don’t watch TV, but I own a few series on DVD that I watch in order to avoid commercials and to watch on my own time.

I’m looking for something that doesn’t insult my spiritual or political (Christian Conservative) beliefs. And I don’t want comedies that exist on juvenile sexual innuendoes.

I love and own the first five seasons of LOST and THE OFFICE. I have the first two seasons of 24, but quit when I saw that the producers are too cowardly to depict Muslim terrorists not backed by white corporate types as the bad guys. I also have BAND OF BROTHERS and the first 10 seasons of THE SIMPSONS.

I was thinking of getting the first season of SCRUBS except I’m uncomfortable watching with my 16 year old daughter because of the frequent sexual situations.

I heard good things about CHUCK.

Any suggestions for a series I can get into?

Good point. You’re not missing anything in general, though it was interesting to see Hardison used that way.

and one of my favorites (but no one else in the house likes them) - “Last of the summer wine”

I love that one also. So does my wife and kids.

Tastes vary, IMHO. I’m more Inspector Morse/Lewis and Midsomer Murders kind of guy. The latest seasons of the latter just put out on DVD. I find them incredibly addictive, though, being mysteries, once you’ve seen them, the edge is off.

Before you buy any DVDs, check out what’s available for streaming free on http://www.hulu.com/browse/alphabetical/episode and http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/

“Burn Notice” new season starts June 3, so Hulu will have that available a few days later. (Things get blown up, but there’s no sex.)

“Castle” is a cute “Moonlighting” sort of show.

“Wire in the Blood” is a Brit series available on Hulu. About a psychologist who helps the police solve murders. Excellent stories, acting, and production, but some situations can be disturbing. Start with Season 1.

“Due South” (from the mid ‘90s) is not available on the Internet, but is on DVD. About an innocent, Dudley Do-Right RCMP who ends up in Chicago.

Brit series on DVD but not on the Internet: “Inspector Morse”, “Sherlock Holmes” starring Jeremy Brett, “Murder Most Horrid” starring Dawn French (very funny and clever mystery anthology), “Jonathan Creek” (more clever and humorous mysteries).

Northern Exposure. Best. Series. Ever.

I also love Mad Men and Dexter (you might not like it, he’s a serial killer but a vigilante serial killer and there’s lots of F bombs, lots and lots).

I just finished watching the 90s TV series Early Edition ... ordered from Netflix.

Silly premise but I enjoyed it. It’s a nice escape.

A great show that originally ran for four seasons. It just started running daily on something called the Gospel Music Channel.

In Plain Sight, Chuck, The Unit, Psych. If you like murder mystery Midsomer Murders, a british series which is very well done.

Dragnet was great, so was Perry Mason, and the Outer Limits. Television has nothing to compare with these days.

As previously replied to, “Keeping Up Appearances”.

That would be pronounced “boo-KAY”, as in, “The boo-KAY residence, the lady of the house speaking.”

You wouldn’t be referring to Mrs. Slocomb’s pet cat that needed feeding and attention, would you?

Add “The Good Life” to that list, too. Old British series about a couple who opt for self-sufficiency, and their neighbors who prefer the pampered life.

I love reading about the Tudor period—I can’t figure out why, but I do!

We’re too cheap to get HBO/Cinemax/etc. (not in the budget, LOL) and I’ve heard such good things about the Tudor series. I’m hoping the library will acquire some of the DVDs so I can start watching..it’s how I saw the ‘John Adams’ series produced by HBO. I loved that so much I asked for it for my birthday (and got it).

Alas—4 kids and $500/month in Catholic school tuition puts a crimp in the buying what you want plans, LOL. I’m just trying to figure out how to start acquiring the “Lost” DVDs without having to rob a bank first :)
