Dirt Cheap Rifle ? : Russian MN91/30 [Mosin Nagant -FOLLOWUP]

Posted on 07/02/2010 11:56:10 AM PDT by JoeProBono

So I splurged and bought a 1939 Russian sniper rifle with sling, bayonet, ammo case, tool kit, etc. for $150 at a local gun shop.

The bolt sticks a bit, but I understand I must clean out the cosmoline, which is my next step. Found all kinds of advice on the subject on the Web. Any FReeper advice?

Its the only one I could find that shows the changes from the newer 91’s.

The sling mounts are different, the sights are different.

Then I found out mine was rearsenaled by the Finnish. and they counter bored the barrel.

Its just a neat bit of history

My fave bit of advice on these is that they are great for boat use in waters that dont allow guns.

They are so cheap you can lose them over board if need be.

I have never found one that operates smoothly when fired.

The bolt can work like butter even cycling un fired rounds but the moment you pop a round off, the bolt sticks.

I have always assumed its because the steel case expands and sticks to the chamber walls, but it does it with brass shells too.

MOSINE NAGANT Late at night, you sometimes have to fight the urge to dig a fighting trench in the yard to sleep in.

MOSINE NAGANT There you have it. In the end, it is clear to any open minded inquirer that the MOSINE NAGANT is the most superior weapon of all time, but the AR and the AK come out as a draw when compared side by side.

I sold my Mosin Nagant about a year ago. Sometimes the bullets would tumble out at ~100 yards instead of spiral.....I suspect something funny with the barrel or riflings.

I ran across several boxes (5 or 6) of ammo some months ago....S&B and Wolf 7.62x54 rimmed. Maybe they are all soft point.....I'd have to go look.

Vasily Zaitsev, a Russian sniper, supposedly achieved 40 “kills” against the Germans at Stalingrad within 10 days with his scoped M-N. You’ve got to have a different shaped bolt to mount a scope on one. My M-N is configured like the one in JPB’s first pic.

I have four. Just couldn’t stop buying them, they’re so much fun to shoot.

The dragoon version I have is the most accurate. Not like my Enfield, but smooth action, nice bore and not re-arsenalled.
