Underwear packaging reportedly recalled from Walmart after Cullman pastor’s complaint

CULLMAN — A local pastor’s complaint about a brand of underwear being sold with “pornographic” pictures on the packaging at the Cullman Walmart reportedly led to a recall of the product.

Frank Boren, pastor of New Hope Christian Center Church of God in the Springhill community, said he noticed the questionable underwear package while shopping at the store in May.

“I was in there shopping for some underwear one day, and looked at the men’s pictures on the packaging,” he said. “On a few of the packages they were very pornographic in the way they were dressed, in skimpy underwear, so I went to the manager and asked her if she thought it was inappropriate to be displayed.”

After filing a few more complaints in the following weeks, Boren said the questionable packaging eventually disappeared from the store’s shelves.

Cullman Walmart store manager Nancy Valentine said Boren’s concerns were forwarded to the corporate office, and an eventual recall of that packaging was likely the result of similar complaints.

“A customer was upset about the picture on the underwear packaging and we sent his concerns to the home office,” she said. “I believe there was a recall on that product packaging later on.”

Boren said he wanted to thank Valentine and Cullman County Sheriff Tyler Roden for their assistance in the matter.

When asked about his role in the reported recall, Roden said he listened to Boren’s complaint — though the issue mostly fell to the discretion of Walmart officials.

“He was concerned about the packaging on some of the men’s underwear being too revealing, in his opinion, to the point that he thought it was pornographic,” he said. “This gentleman voiced his concerns about that.”

There used to be something called “modesty”. We seem to have lost that concept.

I agree. To me, this isn’t about underwear but the entire society. Viagra and products to “grow” certain anatomical parts constantly on t.v. and Cosmo in the lines at the grocery stores. Now, I cover this rag after my then six year old sounded out the word “orgasm”. (the article was how to have multiples in bold, black lettering). It is just desensitizing anyone with any modesty.

I think it was a good business decision...something doesn't have to be porno. to be crude or vulgar...Too many people have forgotten about modesty...Back when I was younger, even women's under ware was at the back of the store so everyone walking by wasn't bombarded with female undies. Modesty is gone and no one finds much offensive anymore when it comes to personal items..

This old fashion and old woman liked it better for shopping for personal items...but we have become numb to much...

Giggling girls holding up thongs in front of themselves has become so common in lingerie departments, but who the he** cares anymore...

A fellow this morning had some gloves made in the USA. New Jersey, to be specific. He bought them at Wal-Mart.

I saw Batman at Wal-Mart the other week. He was shorter than I thought he would be.

Yes, Frank. Tell the whole world what stirs your loins.

Wtf? Its a picture of a guy in underwear on a package of underwear. Am I missing something? Glad he didn’t go to the ladies section.

I get the impression that that section wouldn't bother him too much.

Sorry, no pictures of the offending "package" at the source.

Then I can't make a comment on this person's opinion of what is appropriate or not. I need to see what he saw. It may be that he is overly prudish or the packaging was more than was needed to simply sell underwear.

The hypersensitivity bothers me more than the underwear pictures. ONE man complains and a corp. recalls something? Would that work for any of us? And if it was because of his religious affiliation, does this mean WalMart will react the same way to a Muslim’s offense? Since they are offended by everything civilized, what will that mean for retail shopping?

Good point.
