Here's a pretty amusing story from "After Action: Your Military Sports Report, " where one young aviator becomes saddled with the call sign "Romo's Bitch" due to his Cowboy fandom. He is not amused.
Ensign Steve Crowston filed a complaint with the naval inspector's office thanks to some of the other suggested call-signs his squadron suggested for him ("Fagmeister" and "Gay Boy"), stating the bawdy nicknames were "workplace harassment." "Romo's Bitch" was chosen, which, limits his purported homosexual tendencies to the Cowboys quarterback. Regardless, Crowston's pissed:
"I was like, wait a minute? What the hell? You think I'm gay? What a way to tell me that," said Crowston, a limited duty officer who was previously a chief.
Aren’t most Naval aviators gay?
(Air Force flyboy ducks and runs.)
What am I missing? Isn’t everyone who likes the Cowboys and Romo gay?
I suggest THAVAGE
This guy makes it to Chief Petty Officer and then turns around and takes an LDO commission to become an Ensign?
And he wonders why people think he’s gay?
Got a new one for him: Whinner.
So Ensign Crowston filed a complaint.
Didn’t like his call sign.
That’s a flashing red warning: Bad Attitude.
Ensign Crowston has dug a deep hole for himself at his first operational squadron. Good luck.
There are a bunch of us USMC, knuckle dragging, Naval Aviator types out here who would take SERIOUS issue with anyone trying to slap that designation on us.
I remember a cartoon drawn on a stall bulkhead in the head at Pensacola’s Whiting Field. It was labeled “Close Air Support” and the first pane showed a USAF F-4 dropping a bomb on a VC hootch from 1500’ AGL. Second pane had a NAVY F-4 dropping his ordnance from about 200’ AGL. The final pane showed the USMC F-4 flying THROUGH the VC hootch.
Having been in the mud very close to “close air support” in ‘Nam, I had to laugh at the accuracy of that cartoon.
HOWEVER, I will always be very grateful for the USAF close air support we received in Vietnam. This old Jarhead grunt and later rotorhead salutes all of you Air Force flyboys out there!
Thank you!
This is way too much fun. Anyway, didn’t know there are pilot LDO’s. Wow. Kind of left speechless. Generally callsigns ring true. I guess my callsign, “Mumbles”, wasn’t so bad afterall. Then again, no one could understand me on the radio.
As a Naval Aviator, I can tell you this guy just made his life a whole lot tougher. Life is tough -— it’s even tougher if your stupid.
“You’re stupid” that is
“So Ensign Crowston filed a complaint.

Exactly - this guy just earned a new callsign - SUMAT - (Shut up, men are talking)- what a whimp!
I'm thinking Hanger Queen might be a good alternative and also describe his new status within the squadron.
On CATC watch one bad night, CAG asked who our remaining pilot was. I thought he was going to bust a gut laughing when I told him it was “Rainman.”
Must be from the F/A-18 “Community” . In F-14s(REAL Fighters) Ensigns would be told to STFU!
“Arent most Naval aviators gay?”
Yes, all of them are gay, definitely Drama Queens. (Former Navy aircraft mechanic).
I suggest "86'ing" the verbal call signs in favor of visuals - for this guy, maybe:
I personally don’t blame him for being pissed about it. Though I suspect there’s something in his personality that brought out the obviously unflattering handle, I still think it’s unprofessional to force a faggoty handle on someone who doesn’t want it.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
