Back in the day they used to kill them and boil them and mix them with feed. I’m pretty sure that’s how Mad cow disease started.
The gaur...thanks! I was trying to recall the name; I read an article recently about someone who was attempting to recreate the species. As I recall, the species has not been extinct that long, so there is a good chance of finding intact DNA for the project, which is ongoing.
There are several sub-species of Gaur. Some of them, particularly the ones located in SE Asia are very endangered. One recent attempt to clone a gaur was unsuccessful as the calf died within a few days due to disease (believed to be unrelated to the cloning). The gaur of the Indian sub-continent is apparently still pretty numerous within national parks and in other remote areas.
