Naming a Dog (Vanity)
Vanity | 09212010 | Self

Posted on 09/21/2010 11:09:25 AM PDT by Joya

I am trying to think of a good name for a dog, just acquired from the pound. He's been neutered, seems to be a bit less than one year old. He's part blue heeler and part black lab with ears that do not seem to be of either of those two breeds. He's joining the alpha male guard dog and the little mama dog who are both getting up there in years.

If anyone has any good suggestions for naming him, I'd appreciate it.

Saw a good one today (thread about a soldier’s lost dog), that I’d never thought of...Wyatt.

The old time 1950s and 1960s dogs names might work like Shep or Buddy.

A friend named a dog Marquez, after Gabriel Garcia Marquez. His dad asked "What's wrong with "Shep?" Of course, the same guy was trying to decide between "Boots" and "Socks" when they kept a half-drowned kitten with dingleberries. He wanted a name that reflected the cat's markings. Dad suggested "Shitass."

That, I like!

In a hat-tip to the historical nature of our times, I submit:

Boston,

or

Revere.

That's cute. I always give my pets people names. Can't wait to have a dog named Steve. Larry is a good one too. Cracks me up.

Have two girls right now (yellow Lab and Landseer Newfoundland), Penelope and Maybelline.

Now that my kids are older, no more purebred dogs for me. We will be going the shelter dog route.

Let’s see, a mixed breed with no testicals......I think Barak fits pretty well.

We usually let pets name themselves. Our Buster actually knocked over one of those big chrome shelving units with our glass-topped cannisters and other breakables on it by crawling under it to retrieve a toy and then using his hind legs (not intentionally) to send our cannisters into oblivion.
Squeak (feline) had an upper respiratory infxn and was very croaky til she finished the abx. Fluffy is gentle and fluffy.
Tigger (feline) bounces up and down vertically when he plays w/his brother, Ninja, who is stealthy and a terrific martial artist. :)

I do not like it when people give dogs goofy names. I like names like Shep, Buddy, Lucky.

One or two syllables, starts with a consonant. About the only rules I have. Dogs usually react to the first syllable, so the second is superfluous.

"Freeper"

LOL my dog on Farmville is named FReep. :D

One of the smartest, best trained Blue Heelers I've ever met was named Frank. He was a great dog. I'd suggest finding a name that means something to you. Finding a name is one of the best parts of getting a new pet.

“Other dogs have named themselves. After a few days of living with the dog the name would present it’s self, such as Doc or Hoot.”

I’m with you on this.....most of my animals have names that reflect their personality....somehow...a name pops up that fits...gotta live with them awhile ..`;-)
