Naming a Dog (Vanity)
Vanity | 09212010 | Self

Posted on 09/21/2010 11:09:25 AM PDT by Joya

I am trying to think of a good name for a dog, just acquired from the pound. He's been neutered, seems to be a bit less than one year old. He's part blue heeler and part black lab with ears that do not seem to be of either of those two breeds. He's joining the alpha male guard dog and the little mama dog who are both getting up there in years.

If anyone has any good suggestions for naming him, I'd appreciate it.

Hmmm...when my dad got his little mixed breed terrier/daschund, we named him William Wallace. He is so fierce and loyal...it just seemed to fit. The whole family just calls him Wally, though.

Don’t rush into a name and the perfect name will come to you.

I happened to be thumbing through the phone book for Anne Arundel County, MD, some years ago, and found someone whose surname was Mackapetercobajewski.

I think that would be a splendid name for a dog.

We decided to name our rescue shelter adopted dog based on a particular aspect of his appearance. As a pup, he had incredibly long legs on a short torso. The German word for legs is Beine. Evolved back to English with Bennie. He loves his name, and now he has his own website. www.benniethedog.com

The end.

Since he's the youngest you can name him

KIDDIE!

Had a friend who did this and we all enjoyed the startled looks that strangers would get when my friend called,

"Here Kiddie!"

and Kiddie came runnin'

Some of our dogs have had names since before we got them. Meaning a name would come to mind and we would say, “our next dog is going to be named Barney or Odie” and when we got thenext dog we would do it.

Other dogs have named themselves. After a few days of living with the dog the name would present it's self, such as Doc or Hoot.

Good luck with your heeler, we had one named Boss Dog because right away he started herding the other dogs, cats and our family. He tried to be the boss.

I've always found that if you're willing to call a new dog "Hey You" for a week or so, the dog will sooner or later do something that suggests a name.

Because he is such a distinctive mix of parts according to your description:
Patches
Frankenstein (Franky)
or, if you are a Mel Brooks fan “Frankensteen”
Superglue (Parts stuck together)
Gromit (from Wallace and Gromit)

Then you can always combine the top suggestions together. Everyone in my house had a different name they wanted. Here is the name of my new English Mastiff puppy (I had to put my buddy Samson to sleep.):

“Ace Maximus Tail-thumper, Guardian heir to Samson the Mighty War Dog of the Couch”. Or, “Ace” for short.

I was thinking of getting a dog and naming it “muslim.” It would be great fun taking him to the park and yelling “here muslim, come on boy, now sit muslim sit.” Of course if he misbehaved, I'd have to scold him “bad muslim, bad muslim.”

What kind of personality does it have? Can you post a picture?

We have seven dogs and we named them for their personalities. The red chow is called "Tramp" because he was a feral dog living off handouts on a Navy Base. Our Ridgeback is named "Scrappy" because he's a lion hound with a heart as big as a house; he would fight a grizzly bear if I asked him to. "Trooper" is a three legged pitbull/lab mix. He lost a leg when he was about 5 weeks old and then was abandoned. He came thru with flying colors. "Harley" is a Rottweiler mix that rolls in mud, won't come when he's called, and likes to roughhouse.
