For The Computer Gurus: Which Linux Is Best?
Today | Brainhose

Posted on 09/26/2010 5:04:44 AM PDT by Brainhose

Greetings;
I recently built a new PC and I plan to run Linux in a virtual machine using VMWare.
I know very little sbout Linux and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on which of the seemingly endless versions was the best to use. Many thanks in advance.

What does Ubuntu Studio do exactly? (Looks interesting) and how much does the software cost?

Whatever you want. Audio/visual packages come with the distro, and it's free.

Read all about it!

Puppy is great for older machines ...and it's creator ...Barry Kauler has announced the release of Quirky 1.3, a small desktop distribution similar to Puppy Linux, but built with a different toolset: see:

Distribution Release: Quirky 1.3

I have downloaded it and fired it up ....not much beyond that.

Mint if you MUST use Ubuntu. PCLinuxOS if you don’t ever want to open a command line thingy. The best GPU from start to finish in my opinion. I do not do coding whatsoever.

The latest PCLinuxOS is so good, I seriously do not miss Windows for anything. 15 or so minutes from installation to cruising the net, all video codecs, flash, all that jazz done. Sound works, wireless internet drop dead simple to set up, NO CODING. Also has Synaptic for a full library of stuff complete with all dependencies set up.

Truly the idiot’s Linux. For guys like me.

Linux is good if are willing to sacrifice some effort in order to save a ton of money.

PLCinuxOS puts the final stake in the heart of this myth. NO effort.

"No Signal" means a problem with the video output or with the cable. Check the connections. Have you done ANYTHING which could affect the video signal?

As I said, Linux is a low risk adventure. You don't have to spend ANY MONEY to try it out.

By the way, I'm older than you (65), although I have spent the last thirty years working with computers. Even so, I would not call myself an OS guru.

PCLinuxOS 2010.

Comes in several different desktop versions.

The KDE version is cool.

I’ve installed e17 on my netbook and like it.
