Mrs. & my Consolation Prize this year is an hour-long flight on this thing

I love the ballon fiesta. I never can understand why half the country doesn’t live in New Mexico. Best weather and aqua blue skies. I am getting ready to order up some Hatch green chiles and have them delivered.

I had to leave NM a year ago..am mighty homesick for it now. ;( I have moved around a LOT, but Albuquerque will always be home to me.

I can relate, l left Phoenix after 13 years last year. I can not wait to go back.

Lived in Albuquerque for two years prior to living in Phoenix. It's just mind boggling to me that so many other locations are home to so many and a great place like New Mexico goes undiscovered. Probably part of it's charm but still...

Too bad on missing the Fiesta.

You didn’t miss much with last nights weather. We got a pounding from hail, lots of it 1” diameter. It broke the skylight clear through, tore big holes in the greenhouse roof, destroyed our apple crop, tore up the garden, and left dimples all over my truck.

Thanks for the ping! We’ve got some friends in town for the Balloon Fiesta, they booked in out near the airport cuz they needed a place with a kitchenette that would take their pets.

They left the hotel at 4:30 a.m. for opening ceremonies on Saturday. Arrived at the Balloon Fiesta Park at 8:00 a.m.! It’s about 15 miles is all! They were in traffic the entire time - traffic that barely moved. I was just flabbergasted.

Managed to harvest all the busted up apples and made sauce or sliced and dried them. I’ve got some metal roofing I can use to close up the greenhouse.

Not a skylight to be had in town - even checked in the S. Valley! So I cut a piece of kevlar sheet from some old project and used that. Can’t see through it, but it’s probably hail proof!

Glad to hear you got it taken care of so quickly. I imagine the insurance hassles with the truck will be the worst. We didn’t get any hail here that I’m aware of. I sure didn’t hear it at least.

A balloon-fiesta mass? For a minute I thought this was a new kind of church service!

Well, there are some who are religiously devoted to flying their balloons...does that count? And when else do folks get up at sunrise...except for mass?

Good luck on the Hatch. My idiot brother called me last week and asked for 10lbs. There’s only one vendor left in town and he’s only selling to tourists because what he has left is of dubious quality.

I don’t think the insurance will be a problem, our agent lives out here and probably got slammed as well.

This is a farm south of Albuquerque that I get my chile from.

If you can’t find the Hatch, give them a try. Nice folks, good chile.

When I lived in Santa Fe in the 70’s and 80’s, fiesta was a family event and you could bring food and have a picnic (with alcohol) on the grounds. The rowdy crowds and then the gangs took over in the early 90’s so they banned alcohol and changed the date twice: From Labor Day weekend (too many bikers and fights with the locals) to the Friday night following Labor Day (too many drunken brawls on the Plaza and shootings) then to the Thursday night following Labor Day. It’s not so special anymore.

And balloon fiesta is getting harder to fly each year as the infrastructure has built up around the park leading to more difficult landings and tangles with power lines.
