Baby Aborted for Cleft Lip and Palate Survives 2 days

ROSSANO, ITALY -- A baby who survived nearly two days before dying in an Italian hospital was aborted only because he had a cleft lip and palate.

Scans of the boy, who was at 22 weeks gestation, had shown the conditions that can be corrected by surgery, but his mother chose to abort him in a hospital in her hometown of Rossano in southern Italy, the Telegraph in London reported. The 11-ounce baby survived the April 24 abortion, but doctors left him to die.

The hospital's Roman Catholic chaplain, Antonio Martello, discovered the boy still alive the next day, about 20 hours after the abortion, according to the Telegraph. The chaplain was praying over the infant and noticed movement under the sheet that was covering the body, the Catholic News Agency reported. Martello informed doctors, who quickly had the child transferred to a neo-natal unit at a hospital in a nearby town. The boy died April 26.

The Italian Ministry of Health issued a statement, noting, "If the news turns out to be true, we are dealing with a very grave case of ... abandonment of a premature newborn, probably also with some form of handicap: an act which is contrary to the sense of human piety and to any medical practice."

Officials are seeking to determine if the death is a homicide, manslaughter or other illegal act, the Telegraph and CNN International reported.

The region's Catholic archbishop, Santo Marciano, said the death should cause society "to reflect on the tragic character of abortion, in so far as it is the suppression of a human being, and in this case, on the illicit character of the definition 'therapeutic.'"

"It also invites us to consider with what ease a person who is seriously malformed and simply undesired is treated inhumanly," Marciano told L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, the Telegraph reported.

The archbishop, over Vatican Radio, said, "I define all this as barbaric," adding, "I believe that non-Christians might also be in agreement on this."

My daughter was born almost 28 years ago with a cleft lip and palate. She has had 15 surgeries to correct the defect and is perfectly normal in every other way. I can't begin to imagine aborting a baby for any reason let alone something as correctable as this.

Abortion is simply unimaginable. Every now and then it hits you...How could anybody not be utterly sickened and horrified by this brutal genocide? Let alone actually have the ‘procedure’! The devil is having his way with these sick people. Pray for them and the innocent, tiny human beings that they massacre.

At least there are people upset about this and wanting an investigation. I doubt that would happen here.

What happened to ‘first do no harm’? Can they jail doctors over there for this? Despicable.

Abortion is premeditated murder by the “mother” who hires the murderer, and by the “doctor” who murders the baby, and by anyone who knowlingly drives the murderer to have the abortion. Premeditated, First Degree murder . . . nothing else but.

I read once the incident of club foot is down by over 70% in the UK. It makes me physically ill to think of that.

My beautiful stepdaughter was born with an upper pallet cleft and has undergone several surgeries. We can’t even imagine having a thought to just get rid of her...

I know the Lord is comforting that baby now. I fear for the future of that doctor and mother.

Abortion is one of the few things that can bring me to tears.

Obama is in favor of this sort of medical decision. Both the abortion, and the subsequent abandonment if the abortion “doesn’t work”.

"Premeditated, First Degree murder."

Absolutely true of all involved, like you said.

My daughter is 23 - and also was born with a cleft lip.
I agree with you whole-heartedly.
An abortion for any reason is horrid - and many do it only because they think a child is inconvenient.

My sister was born with a cleft palate and lip. They wouldn’t let my mother see her until her mother arrived from Ohio (she was in California.) My mother said a nurse who was pregnant wouldn’t touch the baby, afraid her baby would “catch it”, and it broke her heart to hear her baby crying and know that nobody would help her until the shift change. After several surgeries, you cannot tell she was born with anything other than a normal face.

Oh, did I mention she is now 65 years old? The person who aborted her child was looking for an excuse to do so.

Every time I read somebody throwing a fit over torture or making the statement that “we don’t torture” I send them a photo of a victim of late term abortion with the caption “we most certainly DO torture in America”.

Yup, that is exactly what it is, murder in the first degree.
