"Hoping we are together in a long and BLOODY war."

You've got to admire his candor.

Patton plans to take the 2d Armored on maneuvers in mid December. I'm betting this will make the press at least in Washington. I'm not sure about the NYT.

They seem to like war games. I'll bet they run something on these. If you have specific dates and locations I will make a note to look for them.

My understanding is that the code intercepted for the raid that evening was ANGRIFF KORN, but at this time the code breakers at Bletchey Park did not know where “KORN” was and only found out later that it was the code word for Coventry. So Churchill did know there was an attack coming but did not know were it would be and naturally assumed that it would be another attack on London. Let me look around a bit and see what I can find.

I’ve been meaning to pick that one up. Right now I’m using “The Patton Papers” as well as “War as I Knew It” by Patton for some source material on the 3rd Army. It’s giving me some insight that works well with all this G-4 documentation I’m sorting through.

I found this website too. It goes along with how I thought it happened.

Now I'm not a clairvoyant or anything, but if I had to place a wager, I'd say that Patton is going to want to test the mobility of his armored division by leaving Columbus, Ga on December 12th and running them down to Panama City, FL and back. Giving time for the press to write their glam piece I'd say there would at least be something on Patton in the Washington Sunday Star on December 15th.

OK - teach - I got my hand raised - with a question.

What is the significance of the article on page 4. about the Schuller family?

That is a sad story, isn't it? And a little odd.

No special significance. It just printed on the same sheet with another article I wanted so I threw it in as a filler. I figure these little items haven't seen the light of day for many decades, and chances are they won't again - maybe ever. Occasionally there is something really significant in one of the shorties that I didn't notice (I don't read everything I post beforehand) but someone else does.

I didn’t know that. Guess I always assumed that the lads at Bletchley were reading all the Luftwaffe traffic. Must’ve been one horrific night for the folks in Coventry.

That is what I thought. Just wonders if I was missing something.

I do like the random stuff - and I agree - long lost souls who have passed long ago and forgotten - are remembered here.

Re your tagline: The Irish have destroyed every team they have come up against of late (In 1940, of course). On October 18 “Knute Rockne - All American” opened. The next day ND shut out Carnegie 61-0. The last couple weeks they took care of first Army and then Navy. Today Iowa is on the menu, er, schedule at South Bend. I’m sort of reluctant to read tomorrow’s paper to learn of the Hawkeyes’ fate. The news from Europe is bad but I don’t know if I’m prepared for this gridiron carnage.

No the point is not that Churchill wasn’t checking on ENIGMA, the point is that ENIGMA might not not have given information that was as precice as specifying the exact target of the raid.

As a side note, one of my favorite Christmas songs is the “Coventry Carol” which is a haunting tune of which I have many versions of. My favorite contemporary versions of this song are by Loreena McKennitt and Alison Moyet.

Which McKennitt album is that one on? I only have “Parallel Dreams” but I really like her work. I’m also a fan of Mary Black, and think they are both just as good if not better than Enya.

I didn’t know about the direction finding method they were using to detect where the bombing runs were going until henkster’s post myself. I just always knew that the code breakers didn’t have the location for the raid nailed down.

It’s a pretty common thing really. The enemy’s code is being read so you know that they are going to hit “x”, but “x” is a new term for a location so you don’t know where. We will see this again when the upcoming attack on Midway comes and the Naval Intel boys will use a pretty slick method to find out what “x” is.

I didn't know the song by name but the melody is familiar. Lovely carol.
