"Caprica:" the autopsy
Vanity | 11/17/10

As many here know, SyFy's "Caprica" was unceremoniously pulled several weeks ago. Pulled so fast that there remain five unaired episodes. Pulled so fast that the cast first learned of it on the net.

What has been printed so far suggests that there were "script problems" that led the producers to pull it faster than a woman grabbing wedding dresses at a Filene's Basement Bride Sale. That the show had failed to find an audience. That the story arcs of monotheists being murdered by the state and a teenager's mind being inserted into a killer robot (noted as 'icky') were just too much for the audience.

The show had some very good acting and an inventive story line. Apparently, not enough to keep it from being blown-up in mid-season.

Web sources say the studio is now working an a second prequel to "Battlestar Galactrica," to show Adama in his academy days. Who knows what the real story might be.

Maybe it would have fit more on the Lifetime Sy-Fy Network?

Spot on.

It’s too bad, it was a good show, but from the first frames it had no mass appeal.

Well, I for one, didn't watch it because I was just coming off of a long stint of watching BSG jumping a light-year-long shark, and had a pretty bad taste in my mouth for the entire franchise.

I suppose it could end up being one of those shows (like Firefly) that I finally watch on DVD and kick myself for not supporting while it was still on.

My comment was more a rant against SyFy than against the show, itself.

I think so, I didn't watch much of the remake, it was to dark for the and the girl playing starbuck just ruined it for me.

“Maybe SyFy canceled Caprica because it has nothing to do with hunting ghosts or professional wrestling.”

You nailed it! Ever since SciFi became SyFy, the network
slid further and further away from science fiction programming. Drives the hubby crazy!!!!!

The name should be changed to GhostHorror Channel.

One more time ~ just over a year ago I was channel cruising through the cable offerings and found MULTIPLE wrestling shows. Most of them were Mexican wrestling.

It's the coming thing ~ a never ending supply of wrestling with costumed Mexicans.

And don’t forget, every Friday night SyFy runs an original movie, all of which are shot in Canada, star people who were on some tv show 10 years ago and aren’t working much lately, and feature the cheapest digital effects imaginable.

There were no characters named “Snooki”.

oh yeah, now I remember how they ended it.

I sort of liked the ending, but hated the rest.

“The show ended with a strong suggestion that the one woman (”Eve”) from which all humans are believed to be descended was actually the child born to the two BG pilots (one of which was a Cylon).”

Remind me again who were those 2 pilots and which one was Cylon?

Maybe SyFy canceled Caprica because it has nothing to do with hunting ghosts or professional wrestling.

It was the ratings. Viewership for new episodes was UNDER 1 million and closer to half-a-million.

SG-U's ratings are just slightly better, so it is in 'renewal' jeopardy.

At the rate it was going, the timeline for patricia helfer’s arrival stretched past 2020. Why they ditched the skin job characters is a mystery. No one wants to see emo touchy feely teenagers and their constipated parents week in and week out.

Don't think it's going to pull a Firefly because the former show moved, had brilliant writing, was funny and scary by turns and had truly wild concepts running through the show. None of that applies to Caprica which had dull characters, only one cool idea (the experiential internet, borrowed from Neal Stephenson) and no humor whatsoever. I'm good with horror but only if it is leavened with some humor (even Cloverfield had its funny moments early on). Caprica simply sat there, daring me to like it. No sale.

As I recall, it was Boomer and Helo’s daughter, and Boomer was the cylon.

Caprica was the only show that I made plans to regularly watch during the week. Maybe that shows what a specialized taste I have. At any rate the show had fantastic cinematography.

I don't remember the characters' names. But, the woman was portrayed by Grace Park, who is now the rookie cop on Hawaii Five-O.

Spot on for every point. One thing I admired about Lost and 24, they had the balls to actually film in the US.

When they made it to Earth...

*Earth was populated with hunter-gatherer humans.
*Starbuck turned out to be some type of “Angel” who was secretly guiding their path all along... she just “disappeared” after saying her goodbyes.
*They decided to stay, and they remotely piloted the empty fleet into the Sun.
