Tennessee State Lawmaker Wants Used Mattress Enforcement

A state lawmaker now wants changes after seeing what a NewsChannel 5 investigation uncovered about used mattresses being sold as new.

NewsChannel 5 Investigates sent undercover shoppers into stores to buy mattresses where employees assured us the mattresses were brand new. But we discovered they weren't new at all. Not only had other people had slept on these mattresses, but one mattress we purchased turned out to be really disgusting.

"I'm offended by that," said state Sen. Joe Haynes, D- Nashville. "I think it's gross. This is deplorable."

Haynes got the law passed four years ago that was supposed to protect consumers. But our undercover investigation found it's simply not working.

"Our intention was to ensure the consumer that they would know what they were buying when they walked in," Hayes recalled.

The law says stores must attach large yellow tags to used mattresses so shoppers know the bed has been used. But, in the stores we visited, we didn't see a single yellow tag -- even though the stores later admitted they do sell used mattresses.

And, as it turns out, no where in the law does it say who's supposed to enforce it.

Mattress Czar?

They’ll need an independent force will police powers. 911 won’t be effective against this kind of crime.

The mattres (leave the last “s” for savings) radio and television advertising in the New York metropolitan area always offered a “money back satisfaction guarantee” as well as a free carting away of the old mattress.

I used to joke about “recycling”, particularly to some of my neighbors for whom recycling was almost a creed. Lately, I haven't seen or heard much of those ads ... lots of news every day about the bedbugs, though.

I think the politicians and bureaucrat regulators have been lying down on the job.

This is NOT the sort of law to pass without sleeping on it first.

What difference does it make if it’s used. You just put a sheet on it and who’ll know.

Mattresses and box springs with bedbugs should marked and sealed in plastic. Handling them in hazmat suits is a plus if you take off the suit in a safe area.
I wouldn't be surprised many areas are already paying for mattress disposal without the service.

which of them has the deal where you get a free try out and if you don’t like the mattress, they come and take it back,—you’re not charged a thing...aand supposedly these same mattresses are destroyed ?
yeah, right . sets costing thousands get trashed.
prove it.

There was a show I watched, (not network cause I don’t watch network except for NCIS) but when the coverings were taken off some of the mattress’s they were really gross with human stains. No cut rate store for a mattress for me...

Oh, c’mon. At least they’re not animal stains. Put an extra sheet on. Or a plastic drop cloth. Out of sight, out of mind.

I am more than happy to let you sleep on used mattress,s with old semen stains or blood stains on it...no amount of sheets takes that picture out of my mind...

The only exception is from a family member, it keeps the stain in the family....LOL
