The site is REALLY slow. There seem to be issues that have been ongoing. I know you're in a Freepathon, but in the LAST Freepathon, I gave you quite a bit of a donation. Why? Because I like the site and I thought I ought to contribute.
This slowness is really frustrating. What's the problem?
Handtowels, you must be rich, I heard Bill and Hillary Clinton use to donate their old underwear...:O)
Yeah, but I don’t know (cue Twilight Zone music) where they came from... I mean, do these things reproduce by binary fission?
My daughter and I threw out all the out of date stuff the last time. And we already cleaned a bag of junk from my husbands desk. That was fun. We found $300 and he never missed it cause he didn't know he had it. :-D
Me, the n00b, now ducking and running for cover...I doubt my ducking and running for cover will help me.....lol
AAAAGGGHHH.....turn off the lightening, please, please.
LOL, no.
Some FReepers could legitimately call me a Noob (and probably wouldn't hesitate to do so, if they needed to point out that I was making comments on FR that indicated that I needed more "seasoning" on a particular topic).
As others have already pointed out, FR is a special place, implemented and maintained by some very, very dedicated people who are determined to keep it a special place for Conservatives to congregate and share the Truth, in opposition to an overwhelming arena of Leftist lies.
After a long period of time at FR, one has already experienced slowdowns, interruptions and outages. One also knows that those keeping FR alive are already working their tails off trying to fix whatever problems are occurring.
While there is nothing wrong with asking what is going on during one of these periodic problems, the venue in which the question is asked, and how demanding the follow-up posts become, shows a lot about the poster.
My post was intended to point out the "Noob" behavior being displayed in some of the posts on this thread.
BTW, I like your tagline, and concur wholeheartedly with it.
No wonder it’s so funny! I “get it” now. Thanks for humoring my dumb butt.
Free Republic has a lot of enemies. You’ve probably been here long enough to know who they are.
Bump for reference.
Take your children and yourself and hide out in the cellar.
By now the fighting will be close at hand.
Don’t believe the church and state and everything they tell you.
Believe in me I’m with the high command.
Can you hear me can you hear me running?
Can you heal me running can you hear me calling you?
Can you heal me can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running can you hear me calling you?
There’s a gun and ammunition just inside the doorway;
Use it only in emergency.
Better you should pray to God the father and the spirit.
Will guide you and protect you from up here.
Can you hear me can you hear me running?
Can you heal me running can you hear me calling you?
Can you heal me can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running can you hear me calling you?
Show allegiance to the flag whatever flag they offer.
Never hint at what you really feel.
Teach the children quietly for some day sons and daughters.
Will rise up and fight where we stood still.
Can you hear me can you hear me running?
Can you heal me running can you hear me calling you?
Can you heal me can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running can you hear me calling you?
But geeze, what it growing in the back of the refrigerator can be frightening..just glad it has no eyes...
No wonder it’s so funny! I “get it” now. Thanks for humoring my dumb butt.
Jeez - what’s really aggravating is how long it just took to download this story about how slowly the site is running, including some error message about a proxy server or something......
I'll keep my eye on the linen closet and if I catch them doing the big nasty, I'll let you know...:O)
In no way are you a "dumb butt". FR simply has so much information constantly flowing through it, that nobody could possibly see it all.
I have been here for awhile, and spend a fair amount of time reading articles/comments on FR, and I still have to "backtrack" on some comment another FReeper has made on a particular thread, because I wasn't "on" FR when the subject came up, and the thread got "buried" by the constant flow of new threads.
Being and "oldie" or a "newbie" on FR isn't really important (unless you want to tease another FReeper a little). What is important is the content of your posts, and that they are intended to contribute positively to the special place that is FreeRepublic.
Have a great weekend WXRGina.
Bill, I can only concur. I run a small dedicated server with only a few dozen low traffic websites on it. If I could afford the time, I could spend 24/7/365 just trying to beat off the waves of spam that are hitting the email server sometimes up to hundreds of times per second. Or trying to ban whole IP blocks of hackers that are trying every script kiddie attack, plus some other rather sophisticated attacks to compromise the server so it would be one more bot in their botnet. Believe me, Julia, it’s a problem you can’t even conceive of unless you’ve run a server yourself.
Then there’s the occasional hardware router that goes down somewhere in or around the datacenter, which brings my server totally offline until one of the datacenter techs finds their problem and fixes it, or has to replace the hardware. And they’re fighting off even worse attacks than I am, as Bill pointed out. My little server is pretty inconsequential compared to the whole datacenter- or with something like Bill has to handle.
Fixing the problem isn’t really as difficult as just figuring out WHAT the problem is. I used to repair computers. Many wannabe geeks thought that just because they could “build” a computer by ordering/buying parts and assembling one that they were experts at repairing them. WRONG! Diagnosing the problem is often 95% of the repair.
I once had a customer who tried to install a hard drive himself in his computer and couldn’t get it to run. So he brought it to me, and asked if he could watch. I let him watch as I checked numerous things out, then moved one jumper from one set of pins to another and booted up the machine. He exclaimed, “If I’d known that, I could have fixed it.” I bit my tongue and didn’t tell him that yeah, after many long years of learning all that stuff, that’s why *I* knew what jumper to change and he didn’t.
I’m sure there are many FR users who think that since they know how to turn on the computer and log onto FR that they’re quite the expert. Sorry to say that until they run even a small server like mine, they have no clue just how absolutely amazing it is that FR is even online day after day. I can’t imagine how John and Jim do it.
That $100 that you very graciously donated? It wouldn’t pay for one hour of a senior datacenter tech’s time trying to troubleshoot a problem with my little web server. I can spend 10’s of hours trying to track down a little typo in a script or a simple file or directory permission that isn’t set right. And I’ve done that many times. That’s when I’m not fighting off the hackers and crackers and spammers.
When FR is slow or down, I get frustrated and antsy too. Then it takes me all of about a millisecond to realize just how frustrated John is and what he’s trying to do to figure out the problem, let alone fix it. So I sit back and thank God that I’m not the one having to handle it... because I couldn’t. Like Bill said, John is good. Very good. He’ll get it fixed. It just may take some time.
There are times that I could swear I saw some of that stuff move!
My Dear Julia,
JimRob is a wise man. He knows that he who pays the piper calls the tune. He doesn't want Free Republic to become a mouth piece for a particular candidate or for the GOP Elite.
Did you know that liberals cannot comprehend that statement?
I now return you to you scheduled broadcasting.
Last time it was down, I realized I could actually *gasp* get news from OTHER SITES. I’d forgotten how to do that. I went to them, was thoroughly bored, and then I cleaned, too. LOL
