Until recently, I purchased spices from Penzeys, a mail order company headquartered in Wisconsin. Aware that the company's proximity to Madison made it likely that the proprietor is a liberal, I was content to do business with them UNTIL owner decided to make a political statement with one of his seasonings.
So, now I'm searching for a source of high-quality spices. I've read previous suggestions of the Mexican area of the ethnic section in grocery stores, but I can't find anything like that in my area. Growing my own isn't an option at this time.
I found a mail order vendor in Suttons Bay, Michigan that looks promising. Still, considering the rich weatlth of knowlege found on Free Republic, I thought I'd ask fellow FReepers for their recommendations.
So, FRiends, any suggestions on where to purchase high quality spices?
Spice House in Chicago!

This place is phenomenal. I visited there and now buy all my spices mail order from them. Try the Ukranian village Spice and the Old World Third St. The oil shop next door is great too. They actually let you sample the olive oil and vinegars!
Thank you, FReepers, for all the great suggestions. You’ve done it yet again.
Thank you. It sounds like I need to take a trip to Chi-town, too.
Great LOLcat.

Can’t get the spicehouse link to work ...
Contact the FReeper whose nic is The Shrew
I got some very good vanilla beans on eBay for about 50 cents a piece - compare to 3 or 4 dollars in the store. And then you can make your own vanilla extract with vodka or light rum. Or just throw a whole bean into a custard.
Wow. That’s a steal.
That’s weird. It works for me.
I’ve been going to The Spice House in Milwaukee for over 25 years. I live in Washington state but grew up in Wisconsin. Every year make a trip there when I am home. They are also great to order from online.

GREAT PRICES!!!
I have been using these two companies for years.
Try thespicehouse.com
or google spice house chicago
Yup, I'm in the spice business and have been for nearly 25 years. The problem is that I only service the trade i.e. restaurants, specialty food stores and artisanal food manufacturers. I'm going to leave a link to a customer of mine who sells my spices and other specialty foods. I hope it helps:
Regards,

Thank you for the link. MondoFood has lots of interesting stuff.
