Remakes of Popular Songs - Which One Is Better - The Original Or The Remake...?

You know, I started thinking about popular music and how artists do remakes of popular songs.

Here are two songs - one from the original artist and the other who re-did it. Which version was better?

"I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" The Byrds (1965)- from the album "Mr Tambourine Man"

"I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" Tom Petty (1989) - from the album "Full Moon Fever"

++++++++++++++++++++++

"The First Cut Is The Deepest" Rod Stewart (1976) - from the album "A Night On The Town"

"The First Cut Is The Deepest" Sheryl Crow (2003) - from the album "The Very best Of Sheryl Crow"

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Yes, I know that other artists have done versions of these songs too. If you think another artist has done a better version, let's hear about it.

Madeline Perioux (sp?) sings a wonderful version of Dylan's “You're gonna make me lonesome when you go”.

DEVO does an AMAZING version of the Rolling Stones “Satisfaction”.

Love the Stones version - but I like the DEVO version better!

Phil Manzanera/801 doing Tomorrow Never Knows

Phil Collins also did a great version of that.

The Patty Smith version of G-L-O-R-I-A sung on SNL circa 1974(?). It blew my freeking mind! She made that Van Morrison song her own.

Emmylou Harris version of the Van Zandt song “Pancho and Lefty” is, IMHO the absolute best.

Pat Boone's “Crazy Train” was infinitely better than Ozzy's.

Jason and the Scorchers’ version of “Absolutely Sweet Marie” beats Bob Dylan’s any day

Orgy’s version of of “Blue Monday” beats New Order’s any day

John Otway’s version of “Green Green Grass of Home” beats ANYONE’s any day

For better and worse, mostly worse in my view, the most influential cover EVER is Run DMC's cover of Aerosmith's Walk This Way.

This cover did three things. It resurrected Aeorsmith's career as people realized the band members were still alive. It knocked the crown off Michael Jackson, who was an unstoppable creative juggernaut in the previous five years, finally giving audiences something new in black music that Michael Jackson did not come up with himself.

And most importantly, it obsoleted the whole musical lineage of Motown, of which Michael Jackson was its standard, and allowed rap to take Motown's place in black music.

It could have not have done all that had it not been a cover of an existing popular song, made fresh by reinventing it in a new form, and even having Aerosmith bless its new form.

BS. I like Brian but his version is crap. That original can never be topped but Joe Satriani has an excellent version true to the original. He could've shredded his way through it but just appreciated the beauty of the song as it was. The song is called Sleepwalk, not Nightmare.

My personal view is that PsuedoEcho’s version of “Funkytown is FAR superior to Lipps Inc’s versiuon.
