How to Become a Positive Thinker

Norman Vincent Peale shares four easy steps you can take to cultivate a positive attitude.

The world in which you live is not determined by outward circumstances as much as it is by the thoughts that occupy your mind. You can think and believe your way to misery or to a life of joy, satisfaction, and abundance. You have the power to choose.

The concept of positive thinking is a philosophy, an expression of faith. It doesn’t ignore life’s problems, but explains a practical approach to deal with, and overcome, them.

Anyone interested in seeking a better, promise- filled way of life, can find it through positive thinking and faith in God. To become a successful positive thinker, here are some ideas to think about:

1. To every disadvantage, there usually is a corresponding advantage. Consider the old truism that behind the darkest clouds the sun is shining. In the toughest situations there is always some value that is inherently good. The positive thinker will look for the good, for the advantage, and will therefore do far better with the difficulty than the negative thinker will. What you deeply think and visualize has a strong tendency to happen. So always think positively, believingly, expectantly, hopefully.

2. It isn’t what is happening but your attitude toward what is happening. Let’s assume a big, hard fact, and here are two men of equal intelligence facing it. One man says. “This is an overwhelming difficulty, more than I can handle.” So he is defeated by the fact. The other man says, “This is a tough situation, but with God’s help, I can handle it.” And he proceeds to do so successfully. It is the attitude toward the fact that is crucial—more so than the fact itself.

3. Develop a positive mental attitude toward the bottom. I have often had to deal with glum and discouraged people who have said, “I’ve hit bottom and there is no hope.” To one such man I replied, “Congratulations. Having hit bottom, you can go no lower; the only direction is up. So start thinking up.” He did, and after a time new ideas came that helped him to move up well above the bottom.

4. Put thoughts of God up against your trouble. A friend of mine, at 84, had her leg amputated. Even so, she does all her housework from a wheelchair. When asked if she ever becomes discouraged, she answered, “Certainly I do.” Then I asked, “What do you do when you get discouraged?” She replied, “What is there to do but get over it? I simply take the attitude that, with the Lord helping me, I can sweep all dark shadows from my mind, as I do the dust in my house.”

Quotations about U.S. Marines:

The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of Marines. Lord, how they could fight! [MGen. Frank E. Lowe, USA; Korea, 26 January 1952]

Marines know how to use their bayonets. [Navy Times; November 1994]

The United States Marine Corps, with it fiercely proud tradition of excellence in combat, its hallowed rituals, and its unbending code of honor, is part of the fabric of American myth. [Thomas E. Ricks; Making the Corps, 1997]

The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next five hundred years. [James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy; 23 February 1945 (the flag-raising on Iwo Jima had been immortalized in a photograph by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal)]

I have just returned from visiting the Marines at the front, and there is not a finer fighting organization in the world! [Gen. Douglas MacArthur, USA; Korea, 21 September 1950]

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don’t have that problem. [Ronald Reagan, U.S. President; 1985]

Marines I see as two breeds, Rottweilers or Dobermans, because Marines come in two varieties, big and mean, or skinny and mean. They’re aggressive on the attack and tenacious on defense. They’ve got really short hair and they always go for the throat. [RAdm. “Jay” R. Stark, USN; 10 November 1995]

They told (us) to open up the Embassy, or “we’ll blow you away.” And then they looked up and saw the Marines on the roof with these really big guns, and they said in Somali, “Igaralli ahow,” which means “Excuse me, I didn’t mean it, my mistake.” [Karen Aquilar, in the U.S. Embassy; Mogadishu, Somalia, 1991]

Always There

My friend is one who speaks to me
And takes the time to write
Who has a thought to spare for me
Whenever day or night.

The one who knows the faults I have
But does not criticize
And who is always at my side
To help and sympathize.

My friend is one who keeps me in
Her constant memory
And now and then will turn to God
And say a prayer for me.

A true friend is a gift of God,
and only He who made hearts
can unite them.

Pearls Of Wisdom

Look back to where you have been...
For a clue to where you are going.
Worry enough to anticipate trouble...
But not so much as to bring it about.
Melt the icy fingers of fear...
With the sunshine of hope.
Step by gentle step...
You can overcome the greatest sorrow.
The sweetest grapes...
Are picked from the vineyard of friendship.
Gossip is like a river...
It can always be traced back to its source.
An insecure person...
Will soak up flattery like a sponge.
Save the life of a helpless animal...
And you have done the work of God.
A mirror is only as good...
As the reflection in it.
Find something you truly believe in...
And everything else will have meaning as well.
May God Bless You

Freedom Is Not Free

I watched the flag pass by one day. It fluttered in the breeze.

A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease.

I looked at him in uniform So young, so tall, so proud, He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years.

How many died on foreign soil?

How many mothers' tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?

How many died at sea?

How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?

No, freedom isn't free.

The Marine Corps adopted Semper Fidelis as its official motto in 1883 (Semper Fidelis is also the title of the official musical March of the Marine Corps).

Translated from Latin, Semper Fidelis means "Always Faithful." U.S. Marines use an abbreviated verbal version, "Semper Fi," to voice loyalty and commitment to their Marine comrades-in-arms.

Previous mottos of the Marine Corps were

(1) To the Shores of Tripoli, adopted in 1805;

(2) Fortitude, adopted in 1812;

(3) From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli, adopted in 1848;

and

(4) By Sea and by Land, adopted in the 1850's.

Memorial Day Tribute

They answered their country's call to arms,

Into battle they did go

Where their final destination was

No one will ever know.

May their final resting place

Under some unknown sod

Be forever hallowed

For it is known only...unto God.

Keeping The Wonder
May 29, 2011

On a recent trip, my wife was seated near a mother with a young boy on his first flight. As the plane took off, he exclaimed, “Mom, look how high we are! And everything’s getting smaller!” A few minutes later he shouted, “Are those clouds down there? What are they doing under us?” As time passed, other passengers read, dozed, and lowered their window shades to watch the in-flight video. This boy, however, remained glued to the window, absorbed in the wonder of all he was seeing.

For “experienced travelers” in the Christian life, there can be great danger in losing the wonder. The Scriptures that once thrilled us may become more familiar and academic. We may fall into the lethargy of praying with our minds but not our hearts.

Peter urged the early followers of Christ to continue growing in their faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love (2 Peter 1:5-7). He said, “If these things are yours and abound [or are increasing], you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (v.8). Without them we become blind and forget the marvel of being cleansed from our sins (v.9).

May God grant us all grace to keep growing in the wonder of knowing Him.

On such love, my soul, still ponder
Love so great, so rich, so free;
Say, while lost in holy wonder,
“Why, O Lord, such love to me?” —Kent

Continual growing in Christ
comes from a deepening knowledge of Him.

Read: 2 Peter 1:2-11

If these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. —2 Peter 1:8
Bible in a year:
2 Chronicles 7-9; John 11:1-29

After surviving WW2, I lost my dad to the big C in ‘78. He is on top of that telegraph pole, under sniper fire he and PFC Bates hoisted our Color’s when Gen MacArthur re-took Corregidor “The ROCK”. They volunteered to do so.
