Web site exposes bad tippers in Brooklyn
NY Post ^ | May 8, 2011 | ANNIE KARNI

Brooklyn food deliveryman Larry Fox, 20, received a $3 gratuity last month after delivering an $89 lunch order to the wardrobe department of the CBS show "The Good Wife." It was the tip that broke the cyclist's back.

The grub-runner, who has worked for Mexican restaurants and upscale delis in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, launched a Web site called "15 Percent" (15percent.tumblr.com), where he posted receipts, names and addresses in an attempt to "out" the neighborhood's worst tippers.

"It started as a public shaming, to call people out who were bad tippers," said Fox, who is paid $50 for an eight-hour shift, and relies on tips to pay his rent. "It's extremely insulting to get handed one dollar on a $50 order you're delivering. People in new condo buildings tip the worst."

The host site, Tumblr, forced Fox to remove customers' personal information from the site, he said, but Fox said he still posts enough information so bad tippers know they've been exposed.

I have a widowed step-daughter who has been “serving” for the last 15 years. I have to send her money all the time. As I wrote, I typically tip 20-25% because I know what a struggle it is for the wait staff.

In a non major metropolitan restaurant you gets about $2 an hour plus tips. I know I was an ass to that young lady, but I hope it gnaws on her mind to pursue another career. She spent too much time listening to the “empty suited” messiah and not listening to reason. From what I have seen, most buffet patrons leave a minimal tip since all the server does is pour you a cup of coffee and bus the table(?).

You obviously want her to enter the new world unaware and unarmed. I could go on and on about this topic but it's obvious you voted for obama too.

Tips originally were for service over and beyond the expected. Now days it's demanded no matter how crappy the service is.

Brainwashed again into feeling guilt. BTW when I save people money from my services I never get tipped.

I believe a tip is for service beyond the ordinary. If all you did was take my order, bring my food and take my money afterward, you don't deserve a tip. This is the most basic of service. Hourly wages should cover this. If you think that this amount of work is worth more than your hourly wages then I suggest looking for other work.

It's a free market. If the hourly wages offered for this minimum amount of work is too low in your opinion, then it must not be in others’ opinions. If this was the case the owner of the business would be forced to pay more for this work or else close their doors because they couldn't keep service employees hired.

The example of the pizza delivery wages not even covering the cost of gasoline is a good example. I'm sure anyone hired into that position will figure that out soon enough and eventually the owner will have to either pay more or discontinue delivery service. Since delivery is probably an essential element to his business that would likely mean paying more and probably charging a delivery fee or raising prices.

When I got home, I related the story to my wife. Now I’m the biggest A**hole on the planet. But I had to say it. Having done it once now makes it easier to do it again. Give it a try.

This does sound familiar.

Way to backpedal now — “most buffet patrons leave a minimal tip.” That wasn’t your reasoning before. You said you were perfectly prepared to give her a decent tip. The fact remains that just because you think she should be in another line of work (??? How dare you???) and she didn’t vote how you wanted her to, you chiseled her, humiliated her, and insulted her to her face.

“Unaware?” She’s sure aware now of what kind of people one has to deal with in the working world. I’m sure she appreciates it. And “unarmed?” That’s the only thing you’ve said that’s right. A waitress is unarmed — she HAS to take your crap or she gets fired. And only a bully and a coward takes advantage of that.

Agree! Do away with tipping altogether. Raise the menu prices if you have to.

We always tip around 25% just to try to make up for the jerks who don’t.

That's commendable, but I question the judgement of anyone who confounds waiters in a restaurant with delivery people.

As for waiters in a restaurant, I always tip at least 15%. For truly bad service, I have been known to tip 2c (after the meal, of course.)

If I have an issue with the food, I will send it back.

Calling you delusional is the kindest response, as well as not speculating as to the positive consequences of "sending food back..."

I hope you enjoy the bodily fluids which will compliment your next non-buffet order there.

I tip 20% in a restaurant; More for excellent service.

I tip the takeout delivery person $1 to $2 per bag, just like a bellman or a bicycle messanger in Manhattan, irrespective of the cost of the meal.

Different services call for different payments.

When my son was a student in high school about 20 years ago he worked as a waiter, back then gov charged taxes on 8% of gross sales, whether he got it or not. Fortunately for him, he always averaged more than that.

You need to understand this... the restaurant lobby has somehow convinced the IRS that they should not have to pay minimum wage to their employees...instead...you should have to make up the difference in the form of tipping.

If you don’t agree with it...support legislation to force restaurants to pay minimum wage to their employees and pay the increased cost per plate.

Don’t take it out on the single mother that will only make 2.13 per hour if you try to teach her a political lesson.

By the way...for those wondering...waiters and delivery people do get the credit card tips as well as the fuel surcharges...everything is not scam...lol.

I have a step-daughter who was a waitress for a number of years at a pizza joint. She said the worst tippers were easily older people. The best tippers were single males. No, she’s does not resemble a Hollywood starlet.

Pure tripe!

If your wage is so poor you “Depend” on tips, get a real job.

The whole “Tip” scam is out of hand, I see “Tip” jars at the selv-serve Buffet and even fast food joints!

A tip is EARNED by exemplary service, not a right just for being there.

And 15%?
No way, if you “Depend” on a 15% add-on to the meal price you are in the wrong line of work.
If I leave anything it’s probably $1.00, I’m not squander-my-money wealthy and it’s the employer who is supposed to pay the staff salary.

I ‘Eat out” a couple of times per month.

Usually a local buffet, no tip, “Service” consist of taking my money up front, and showing me to my seat.

Very occasionally “fast food”, no tip for a meal wrapped in paper and handed to me out of a window!

Any place that puts the “Tip” into the price automatically forfeits my patronage.

Once I a while I go “Out” to an actual restaurant, the tip if any, depends on the service, but it will never exceed 10%, our sales tax is 7%.
Why should the waiter expect more than the state & city mandate?

If the restaurant does not pay a decent wage, let them go out of business for lack of hired help.

My gf father always said you can tell what a man is like in how he treats and tips a waiter or waitress.

That behaviout speaks volumes about the character of a person, regardless of gender, and was responsible for a couple of women in my youth not ever being called for a second date.

Forget to add, I’ve worked in the “Food Industry”.
It’s they sort of work that should teach young people to stay in school and study hard to avoid having to do it for any length of time.

When I meet people who have done it for decades I tend to feel sorry for them, and wonder about their intelligence or commitment to a decent life.

That’s something my husband and I believe and have taught our daughters as well. The way one treats servers is a glimpse into their character....

That said, the blogger needs to get out of the delivery business as he apparently doesn’t have the character to accept with grace the lumps that come with the territory. While I’m sure he thinks he’s very clever and justified in what he’s doing, it’s in extremely poor taste and if he’s fired for “outing” the customers of the business that employs him, the firing will be earned.
