We have two schools of thought around FR. On the one hand we don't want the teachers to touch our kids. On the other hand we want them to stop people who try to touch our kids.

I suppose we could take a vote on this. On the other hand (three hands already eh!) maybe you could give us a solution.

Ok, so you a really fat black teacher watching two white young fit boys beating each other, maybe he got off on it. (Yea, gross I know.) I hate teachers unions.

Unless he would be allowed to beat the crap out of the perp without being punished I support the teacher.

They have been reprimanded for intervening. So there is a huge question mark as to what’s truly appropriate.

I think this is the key. If the teachers aren't given the authority and the backing to maintain discipline, then events like this will happen.

In a better world, a teacher would be reprimanded for not intervening -- or, more to the point, for a failure to maintain order -- but our over-litigious society has pretty much made that impossible.

As the husband of a Teacher, I have to agree. She’s been threatened with lawsuits for patting a kid on the shoulder for a good job. I can’t imagine how fast she’d get sued for “assaulting our perfect Angel, Johnny” for breaking up a fight.

Until we get the ambulance chasers under control in this country, we are going to have to accept the damage they do to every other area in society.

We are told as teachers not to touch ‘em and that we can be held liable.

The Supreme Court has ruled that police don’t have an obligation or duty to protect anyone.

Why a teacher would have an obligation to protect anyone is beyond me.

Simple solution - online schooling - fire all teachers.
This clown can go apply for a job at McDs.

Remember the criticism of home schooling?

It did not socialize kids as public schools would.

Looks like public schooling gets your kids pummelized.

The problem in this case is the fact that the teachers have had all authority to punish/intervene/reprimand/etc taken away from them. No longer are they allowed to dole out consequences. The kids know this.

Had this situation happened at my high school when I went there, that teacher probably would’ve grabbed the culprit by the ear and tugged him all the way to the office for a spat or more on the backside. Possibly even suspension.

If the kid getting punched was one of Holder’s people and a White teacher stood around and did nothing, he’d be up on charges of conspiracy to violate civil rights.

If my boy stood there and let another kid use him for a punching bag like that I would kick his butt again when he got home.

Why do you think the kid was hitting him? Because he knew he could, with impunity. He knew this kid would’t fight back.

Kids have to learn to fight back or get stepped on. Real life isn’t waiting for a teacher to step in. Real life is letting people know you will not be abused. YOu are getting hit already make the kid hitting you hurt, then he will leave you alone. If you get suspended for self defense, then take the suspension, it’s better than being picked on by every kid in class.

I'm a retired Texas school teacher and have intervened between students fighting. Once I was pushed through a plate glass window. I was on Workman's comp for ten weeks from having tendons severed in my left arm. After that I just stood and watched after calling security. The district did nothing they did not have to do and had to be forced to do some of those.... I lost a bundle in lost pay! I did not belong to any union!!!

Taking the union out of the equation, with all the damn lawyers out there I dont blame him for not getting involved which is a shame. Although I fear stupid lawsuits I would have to do something, at least call the darn cops.

I always break up fights if I am nearby. I’ve even seen cellphone vids of me doing it (and thought, “Those guys didn’t look that big at the time...) I work in a non-union state and my school system really doesn’t have much of a policy about it, although the unspoken, unwritten rule is male teachers are supposed to (not all do). I would do it anyway. It is just a necessary part of the job- if you want an orderly school, you have to make it that way.
