Word For The Day, Monday, June 13, 2011
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
mumpsimus [muhmp-suh-muhs]
-n, plural -muses
1. adherence to or persistence in an erroneous use of language, memorization, practice, belief, etc., out of habit or obstinacy ( opposed to sumpsimus).
2. a person who persists in a mistaken expression or practice
[152030; from a story, which perhaps originated with Erasmus, of an illiterate priest who said mumpsimus rather than sūmpsimus (1st plural perfect indicative of Latin sūmere to pick up; see consume) while reciting the liturgy, and refused to change the word when corrected]
The Stanley Cup is in the house tonight!
EMPEROR BARACUS SUMPSIMUS ZERO
Nice to see Dallas recovering from the Heat...lol
‘Way to go Dallas!!!’ (What movie?)
Where did you find “sumpsimus”? It isn’t in the dictionary - not even The Oxford Dictionary OF The English Language.
I have had the word and definition of mumpsimus posted in my cube for about 9 months now. My boss asked me about a month ago how long I had it hanging there after he had read it and chuckled...
Would someone please give to myself an example of a grammar mumpsimus?

“During the course of administration, and in order to disturb it, the artillery of the press has been levelled against us, charged with whatsoever its licentiousness could devise or dare. These abuses of an institution so important to freedom and science are deeply to be regretted, inasmuch as they tend to lessen its usefulness and to sap its safety.”
Thomas Jefferson, Second Inaugural Address, 1805
I Love the sound of Jefferson in the Morning...
Today’s word is “mumpsimus,” not “sumpsimus.”
Irregardless, here is a link:

Do you mean “mumpsimus”?
Whenever I hear a mumpsimus such as “The kids gave a gift to Herb and I,” my cheeks get all swollen.
“Irregardless”!
They're instead of their. You welcome instead of you're welcome. Spendy instead of expensive.
LOL... Nice one Dave!!!
My name is Maximus Decimus Mumpsimus...?
Using irregardless in the context of mumpsimus was a joke, right?
Thank you. That’s what I wanted to know.
Did you find the mumpsimus I embedded in my question?
Yup, ignored it I did.
I'll take liberals for 200 Alex.
