SG, I agree with your list of words! My favorite mumpsimus from FR was said repeatedly by a woman who was so nutty you had to wonder if she was a plant from DU. She insisted the word rampant was instead, rampid. I even tried to correct her in freepmail but she insisted I was wrong. So we use the word “rampid” around my house all the time now. lol

In my old job, we once were running some machines 24/7 to produce parts for Ford. Some of the operators were not the brightest people in the world. I looked at a log sheet one day and this operator reported overnight several problems with a “lemon switch” on the machine.
Maybe he was hard of hearing, or maybe just didn’t get the concept of a “limit switch.”

LOL, you’re right — call me an illiterate priest ;)

You mean heighth?
If we designed English from scratch, it would make sense for width, length and heigth to all end the same.
But, they don’t.
OK, how about this one? It’s not a language thing, but more of a logic one. I once went to a place that had two sizes of pizza: medium and large.
That’s not possible, is it?
To: Explorer89
Ummm, that would be SMARTIE-Pants.

Isn't that how they serve drinks at the movies? No smalls. But while thinking of big, everyone say a prayer
for the Big Man.

I’ve no problem with regular and large. But medium must be between 2 things.

Best adman ever. Peggy. He help you.
I thought of another mumpsimus by the big zero: corpse man.

“Mumpsimus? Over at Digger's (Digger is a gentleman of an African persuasion, Nijeeryah or something like that)),.... Over at Digger's Funeral and Fiberglass Repair Parlor (The Parlor without the Pallor, The Plastic Makes You Look Fantastic) we was just discussing how that the late Bostain Dumlap’s swelled up cheeks made him look mumpsimus.
Digger said the family wanted old Bostain to look life like so Digger stuffed his mouth with Beechnut Chewing Tobacco, Wintergreen flavor, and that was as close as he could go cause old Bostain only drooled when he tried to talk and chew at the same time.
Digger wouldn't tell us what he did with the rest of the Beechnut he charged the family for.
Anyhow Sumpsimus is like that pump Digger has in the sub basement to draw the vital juices out of the corps he fixes up. Makes me think of that T.V. Anker Woman on the News. She looks like Digger put her on the Sumpsimus pump too long, reminds me of Bostain without his teeth or chaw of Beechnut.
Mumpsimus, Sumpsimus, swelled and puckered.”
