Fruit is ok, but not fruit juice. That’s just pure sugar. Fruit that has fiber is good for you.

Eat several SMALL meals a day. Include fruits and proteins, and as many veggies as you want. Stay away from potatoes, corn, and any other starchy veggies.
Drink water all day long.

A suggestion...you are in a hot climate....and I KNOW I love diet soda on hot days....I’ve found a substitute....an organic lemonade (or even a lemon squeezed into a glass) up to 1 inch per glass...add ice, and seltzer/sparkling water....to give it fizz. It satisfies me MOST of the time.

Yeah, we just bought a bag of lemons for about $2 at a discount supermarket to do something like that. The doctor ordered me off of diet soda saying it was actually worse than regular sugared soda.

and this will help with being hungry an hour or so after dinner? I find this is the case if I do not eat carbs with a meal.

Thank you. I really do need the help.

Yes. If you really MUST eat carbs, eat the ones that take a while to digest, the high fiber ones like oatmeal or whole grain bread.

I ALWAYS ate until I was full, but found that a half a sandwich or an apple will take me for a couple of hours. Drink LOTS of water.

Hope you can get a handle on your health. Your walking regimen will help a lot! I’ll keep you, and your wife in my prayers. Would you mind freepmailing me your and your wife’s first names, so I can put you both on my Parish Prayer list?

The BP is up there but not too awful. I can’t interpret A1C, but can you give us a handle on the mg/dl?

A1C 12 = 297 mg/dl, that 24/7.

“Only our minds limit us.”

Sometimes, when I’m running, I think to myself my only limit was the one I set for myself. I’m not sure why I think that, but I know there was a time in my life, from about 25-35, where I know I was trying to destroy myself.

I almost succeeded.

Now I am doing the exact opposite, sometimes when I’m going up, I experience something new, this is gonna sound silly maybe, but I call it a reverse panic attack. Instead of a sudden onset of terror, it is a sudden onset of sheer happiness.

Sometimes I put my arms up, extend my fingers, look up to the sky, and thank God for my life. How things have changed.

The last time I saw my cardiologist, I hadn’t quite started running yet. I told him about walking up the hills at brisk pace, and he said listen to your body, if it tells you you are going too fast, then slow down.

But when I listen to my body, it tells me push me harder, Chris...and at the same time, my old dog is telling me, slow down crazy fool :P I tell ya, I wish I was in as good of shape as my dog, he looks great for a 12 year old shepard.

I’m headed down to Navarre Beach for Independence Day. Goal is to do some snorkeling, reading, hopefully rent a kayak and try that out, see if it makes me sick or not, and maybe, just maybe, run for a bit on the hard packed sand.

Heh, I think I may have been the one to coin the term “Mount Milton”. Essentially, it’s a hill compared to real mountains, but being that I’m from New Olreans, a bowl, I figured I could get away with a bit of a stretch.

However, it is a significant hill. If one was to attempt to ride a bike up it, one would certainly know it. If I had to estimate, I’d guess it’s about 250-300ft higher than sea level.

When I walk down from my house though, towards the river, there is a series of 3 inclines that are a bit steeper than the incline of the main road up it, especially the last incline.

At the end of this summer, I’ll be visiting my brother, his wife, and my very soon to be born nephew in Denver, Colorado. I told him that I would very much like to go hiking/ camping to see the outdoors there. I imagine it is magnificent. So that’s gonna be a test.

To get ready for this, I’m going to be walking my hills with a full pack very shortly. Pack weighs 31.2 lbs fully loaded, and it really is quite a burden, but I gotta get used to it. I’m not sure that I can double time with this pack on the flats, but I’m pretty sure I’m gonna try after some practice!

Prayers for you, 2ndDV. I always enjoy your posts. Wish you could post and walk the mall at the same time. It would make the half hour go by so much faster. You could listen to Mark Lavin's podcasts if you have an IPod... time would fly then, but I don't think Mark is good for high BP. You will be in my prayers along with your wife.

It sounds like you are on the right track, and I read that high fiber (gradually building up the high fiber) helps with sugar problems, as does Chromium and cinnamon (good on oatmeal, which is high in fiber).

Prayers said for you and your wife, and all concerned!

Why would you have to submit yourself to boring mall-walking?

I can not imagine doing that if I lived in Mississippi. I suffered a serious heart deterioration almost three years ago, and had to have an implant of a pacemaker/defibrillator.

My energy potential deteriorated severely, and due to our seasonal weather, I gained weight every winter (five months/year) of sitting on my butt inside, and lost weight every spring, summer, and fall (seven months/year), due to lawn mowing, vegetable gardening, and tending a few flower beds around my house.

Early last spring, I decided I needed winter exercise, so I bought an inexpensive non-powered treadmill to use to try to stay in shape through the winter. Unfortunately, I did not do this until very late last spring, and only used it a few times, but I really believe it will be more convenient to use it than it would be to drive to a mall.

Though I only used it for a short while, I believe it helped me avoid having to buy some more jeans with a larger waist size.
