I don’t own a treadmill or other exercise equipment. Mrs. 2ndDivisionVet is the manager of a store at the mall and we live a quarter of a mile away. I’ll just take her to work and walk as long as I can.

OK .. you have your marching orders. Prayers sent for your health, perseverence, and diligence in this mission and for your wife’s health. God bless both of you as you work on this mission as you must.

Get well—we need you to vote for Palin 12. I know it’s easy not to take care of oneself, but I think you will be able to reverse this if you start now. Best wishes to you and your wife.

OK, that may be a good reason to mall walk. (Having to go there anyway.) Different for me. I have to drive 60 miles to get to a mall!

Our local hospital does have some walking space, and even a few exercise machines, but I ain’t driving a mile (uphill both ways through 2 feet of snow) in mid winter to exercise, if I can walk on my treadmill while I watch the news channel I want (Not CNN), while I walk my several miles in my house, without going outside in the 0 degrees F temps.

You can do this. Life is not yet done for you. Pray, and follow the doctors’ orders.

Prayers up for a steady and healthy recovery, 2ndDivisionVet.

Want to lose weight? First rule - eat at home as much as possible.

Watch the pastas/white bread.

Romaine lettuce with a little bit of mozzarella cheese (no fat). If you must, use a no-fat dressing; otherwise put a little dressing on the side and dip your salad in it.....you use a lot less dressing than smothering the whole salad with it.

Find some good lo-fat recipes with boneless chicken breasts .....lots of them out there.

Cooked Oatmeal (I like the 1-minute) is a great source of fiber and filling (tastes better with a little brown sugar and vanilla mixed in).

Yogurt - no-fat flavored yoplait tastes awesome.

Stay away from sodas. drink tons of water. I found that if I have a water bottle nearby, I drink a lot more. I have an RO system, so don’t have to keep buying new water bottles all the time.

If you start losing weight, you might want to throw in some light resistance exercises for toning using free weights. Doing it with an exercise ball at the same time can also help build your core muscles at the same time. (although you have to have good balance for some of those exercises!)

Good luck! Most of all, have some fun with trying a new lifestyle.

God Bless you 2ndDivisionVet! Hey we need you around here to post the great articles that you do! Am pulling for you!

You are probably tired of suggestions, but sounds like diet is the answer.

There has been a lot of the same situation in my family, this is how we beat it.

Tell you what I eat, oatmeal every morning, no sugar, and with only skim milk. with 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with peanut butter. Now you cant buy Skippy or the reg peanut butter, you need the natural kind that does not have the bad oil in it. Look in most large super markets and you will notice the oil is on top, has to be stirred when you first open it, or you can buy it at a health food store.

Lots of boiled chicken with the SKIN REMOVED, before you boil it. lots of veggies, potatoes etc, no butter/margarine on any of it.

We do not keep margarine or butter in the house, or cheese for that matter.

Bacon Eggs and sausage have to go (atleast in our household)

Now you can make pretty good french toast with egg whites, but no syrup, a little bit of ketchup is ok, same deal for scrambled eggs with just egg whites, throw the yokes out.

For snacks... popcorn is good, but can not be any of the micro jobs....you need a popcorn maker that you plug in, they cost about 15 bucks if you do not own one.

You can use canola oil liquid for oil, I use salt on popcorn, but cut it out on other areas.

French fries.....frozen french fries that you bake in the oven seem to work for us.. Read the ingredients on the bag, make sure there is no hydrogenated oil or even partial hydrogenated oil in it...should only say Canola or sun flower or something along those lines.

Always avoid hydrogenated oils, palm oils etc or any tropical oil for that matter.

Soda pop, and artificial fruit drinks may be a good thing to avoid...diet soda I guess is ok. Frozen orange juice with extra water in it...water is good!

Tea /coffee without sugar, only use skim milk. Switch to skim milk for everything, and before you know it, you wont even notice the difference.

Pulling for you friend

I agree with MANY posts here.. mall walking is not as much “fun” as the great outdoors. If you don’t have your own dog to walk, why not see if a neighbor would like you to walk their dog daily. Good way to get some exercise, meet people etc. I WOULD LOVE A NEIGHBOR TO OFFER THIS

I did FReep Mail you my info. If it is not usable (the hotlinks) let me know & if I get your email I will send you the material in that way.

smooches this morning to the first day of a NEW YOU!

I will keep you in my prayers, 2ndDivisionVet.

Did your doctor re-check your blood pressure (B/P) before giving you the shopping cart full of meds? Sometimes, sitting in the waiting room, thinking of everything that could be wrong raises your B/P by itself.

Walking and limited portions of foods are a very good start.

PS: Hate to tell you, but as a former insurance analyst, your BP, although elevated, would not have met admission standards for the company I worked for. So, you are doing the right thing by exercising and watching your food intake.

My best wishes to you.

Thank you, Dolly. I will copy and find it all as soon as my current comp problems are wrestled to the ground so to speak...

Yes, I practiced on myself for years and learned a lot! And family and friends who’d hold still. Now I have informal clients - people keep asking me for help, and the amazing thing is - when they do what I suggest and take the herbs, they get batter - often amazingly better. The proof is in the pudding.

Something I drink a lot of in the summer (I hate the heat) is home made peppermint tea, I buy peppermint by the pound as I have not been able to grow it here yet, and drink it plain without sugar. Not too strong for me, if it’s very strong it needs sweetening. Not only is it cooling, refreshing and hydrating, it helps digestion too. I always keep at least a pound on hand.
