Vanity: I like turtles
me

Posted on 07/06/2011 5:30:15 PM PDT by West Texas Chuck

OK, how long till somebody posts the little zombie kid who "likes turtles?"

That's cool. I have 2 Mississippi Map turtles, one Common Musk turtle, and a new Red-ear Slider. I also have a Box turtle, Buddy lives in my garden.

I'm going to see this on Sunday with The Warden, can't wait:

Do I have to eat worms and snails too?

Yuck. I hate worms.

We found a turtle exactly like that one and about the same size in our yard once. Cute little guy. I think I looked up what kind he was at one point, but I have since forgotten.

Absolutely beautiful animal, the camo is stunning.

Looks a bit grumpy, though. What’s he complainin about? Can’t even small turtles like that outlive humans by like 100 years or so?

I once watched a guy feeding some baby Diamondback Terrapins he was raising in an aquarium. I've never seen reptiles which acted so alert, lively, and apparently intelligent.

As for Salmonella, all birds carry it. There are no sterile, germ-free animals. You don't even want to think about all the potentially pathogenic bacteria which live in and on human beings. Soap is your friend.

Two of my favorite 'lil Texas critters; the box turtle and the horned lizard

My mother said these two little creatures were everywhere when she was a girl, but now they are both on the endangered list. (DDT and distruction of habitat I guess)

Wish I had one of each, but it's prohibited to keep them as pets since they're endangered.

Amazing fact about the horned lizard, it can shoot blood from its eyes as a scare tactic against its enemies. Little thing is actually harmeless.

Come to think of it, I haven’t seen my yard turtles in a while. Been dry for months, so they probably went further into the swamp.

People always gettin their panties in a twist over things like grocery carts and door knobs. A little strep, a little staph, no biggie...

I tell them if they really want to learn about wildlife, go and walk around in their backyard for a while.
Barefoot!

Probably enough tetanus and anthrax in the average yard to kill an army. Not to mention the parasitic worms, etc.

;-)

Some people keep snakes. Nobody ever got squeezed to death by a turtle, but a bunch of 'em have been bit by their pet cobra or rattler or whatever. Gimme turtles. I know a guy who keeps 5 African Spurred tortoises in his home. They poop here and there, and move his coffee table around, but they are friendly and don't chase cars and the neighbors will never call the cops because your Spurred jumped the fence and ate their cat. As far as I know, anyway:

This is the time of year when box turtles and snapping turtles cross the road in my neck of the woods. Whenever I can do it without risking my life I stop and move them to the side they were headed. I don’t understand why people run over turtles. They aren’t that hard to avoid.

I saw a horny toad a couple of years ago, down in San Angelo SP. First one I’ve seen in years. Back when I was a kid in Oklahoma, they were everywhere.

I have seen box turtles around here, over at the mountain bike trail I see them occasionally when I am riding.

We find those around here from time to time. The Dallas Aquarium has an Alligator Snapper that goes about 100 pounds, has grass growing all over his back.

That sucker can take your foot off, don’t mess with him.

I seem to remember the fall is when we found thousands of turtles floating in the small lakes. First time I saw such I thought they were walnuts that had dropped off the trees...floating.

Very neat...

Yeah that was taken earlier this summer. I used the zoom on my camera. :) Might have been a female looking to lay her eggs—apparently they often move away from water to find sandy spots in early June-July for that. We live somewhat close to a lake which is prime snapping turtle habitat.

Chuck, how are the box turtles and horned lizards doing out your way?

Anybody else in Texas have a report?
I’d sure hate to see these little creatures go extinct.

Thanks.

Thanks, Chuck.
Seems like the box turtles are faring better than the horned lizards.
It’s a shame these two facinating little Texas creatures are endangered.

I see the boxies over here at Rowlett Creek Preserve from time to time, they are still around. I see them up in Arkansas a lot, but mostly squashed on the road unfortunately.

The poor little horned toads have suffered from the fireants, they say. I saw a few in the last couple of years, mostly down around San Angelo, Texas Parks and Wildlife says they are coming back slowly.

I like horny toads, we used to catch them when we were kids, they are really cool animals. I like how they flatten out against the ground when you approach them, now that is cute.
