Customers stopping in at a Lenexa gas station saw a scary struggle Wednesday night.
Surveillance video from the BP near 87th Street and Goddard shows a would-be robber lunging at the clerk with a knife. The clerk struggles with the crook and ends up pushing him out the door.
"I got a knife wound. It looks better than yesterday," said Aaron Jacobs, the attempted robbery victim.
You could say Jacobs is one lucky guy.
"He was right behind me and he pulls out a knife. It looks like he is trying to stick it in my neck," he said.
But you'd be wrong.
"When you train in martial arts you train your body to react," said Jacobs.
What Jacobs is, is a highly trained ex-marine with 25 plus years of martial arts training, combat, self-defense and lethal and non-lethal training. In short, when a man tried to rob him at knife point at the BP station in Lenexa on Wednesday night, he really should have thought twice.
"I don't think he was expecting to run into someone aggressive. I don't think he thought I was going to throw him into a chip rack and almost break his arm," said Jacobs.
Jacobs showed KCTV5's Jeanene Kiesling the move he used. The surveillance video shows a less gentle Jacobs quickly disarming the suspect and throwing him around. With customers in the store, Jacobs' concern was them so when someone opened the front door and the suspect took off running, Jacobs didn't wait around – he hit the alarm button, put the knife on the counter then went running after him.
Jacobs says his biggest regret was not catching him.
"I wish I could have put him in more pain, apprehended him and dislocated his shoulder," said Jacobs.
The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
No one was seriously hurt but the crook is still at large.
