Cool map from ad network JumpTap breaking down which mobile operating system is most popular on a state by state basis. As Dan Frommer at SplatF put it, Android versus iPhone is the new red state versus blue state.

Seems to me this could be more attributed the cell phone carriers, since Android and Iphone did not deploy at the same time.

Red vs. Blue? I don’t think so.

There is no noticeable correlation.

My guess is it has more to do with Verizon/ATT and the timed launches of the the iPhone. I was only able to get an iPhone this past spring—because Verizon did not offer them, and folks will migrate over as their contract comes up.

I would hardly call Calif a red state.

Strange....it seems like I see far more iOS in Washington than is implied by this map.
But maybe I just notice iPhones more because I use one................for now.

Last I knew iphone sales were being subsidized, so that may skew a popularity contest.

Interesting, and glad to see Texas on the right side of that :)

My state is still using Black Berries. Troubling, troubling indeed.

Almost all cell phone purchases are subsidized by carriers and have been for many years. The iPhone is not unique in that respect.

The article is not saying the states that are “Andriod” states are “red states”, they’re saying the ‘red/blue’ argument is being replaced with ‘Andriod/iOS’ argument.
Sort of the way Hatfield/McCoy replaced Montague/Capulet.
Just another way to divide and have people against each other.

I think you’re right. I think Verizon users went with Android because the iPhone wasn’t available for so long and now they’re just sticking to it.
I went in planning to purchase an iPhone and came home with an Android instead. Couldn’t find an advantage for one phone or another but was told iPhones could only be repaired at an Apple store... the closest one is an hour and a half away. :/

Could also be related to the business versus personal use of cell phones? In the Maryland/Virginia/DC area and NY where there are government and financial industries, the Blackberry has dominance. Can't say for sure but my feeling is that bb is more secure (for example my company can remotely wipe my bb if I lose it and it gets wiped if I screw up my password more that 7 times).

Meaningless. There are dozens of Android devices and many providers.
Until recently there was only one cell network with iOS devices constraining the markets.

Verizon coverage versus AT&T coverage?
I moved my iPhone from AT&T because they sucked for coverage to Verizon that has much better coverage.
