Space may be the final frontier, but Star Trek is a well-explored universe by now. Captain Kirk, the Enterprise, transporters, phasers, tricorders and Klingons are part of our common language. But there's still tons of insane stuff you've never heard about Trek.

While growing watching Star Trek TOS, I never knew it would lead to 7 of 9. But WOW!

I have a couple of questions.

First, what happened to the Andorians? Did the the Federation ethnically cleanse them from the galaxy?

Second, what the hell happened to the Klingons. In the original series they didn’t have bumpy foreheads but they did in all the later series. Even the “Enterprise” prequal series gave them bumpy noggins.

As for the Klingons in the original series, I think it was just the limited budget that kept the Klingons looking more or less like us.

You see some of the scenes with a few beardless Klingons and it’s hilarious. You realize that Klingons were just like us only with a coating of motor oil.

I read that in “The Cage” the character that viewers violently hated was Majel Barret as the female first officer “Number One”. Supposedly, female viewers hated her most of all.

So she came back as the lovesick Nurse Chapel...

Personally I think the Andorians would have been better allies than the Vulcans. The Vulcans were devious backstabbers but you always knew where you stood with the Andorians.

I remember reading something about that once. It had something to do with coming from a certain class or clan of Klingon.

I always liked Star Trek tho do not consider myself even close to a “Trekkie”. Like most shows there were some good and weak episodes. Some of the better ones involved conflict with Romulans or Klingons.

I do think they did an amazing job of saving the footage from the pilot and using it to create a couple of very good episodes.

I saw an interview with their props manager and it really is surprising how well he did with so little. Much of their sets came from Paramount’s dumpsters. He said they did have one advantage in that no one knew what a star ship was supposed to look like.

I remember reading that the top NASA scientists visited the set of the bridge in the 60s to see what they thought. They agreed that most of the situation would be realized in our future.. warp speed, space travel, even transporters. The one thing they all agreed would never happen was getting doors to open and close by themselves...

Worf mentioned it when they went back in time to Kirk’s Enterprise. He said it was a story best left for another time.

“Enterprise” actually plausibly explained that. The Klingons originally had the forehead plates. They attempted to create a caste of warriors combining human and other DNA with Klingon using a virus that got loose.

Don't you guys remember the classic scene from DS9?

Worf acknowledged the difference in appearances when the crew of Deep Space 9 returned to the 23rd century in the episode "Trials and Tribble-ations," but offered no explanation, saying merely, "We do not discuss it with outsiders."[24]

I did not realize that The Enterprise featured a 6-lane bowling alley. Now that is hard to wrap my head around, Dr. Spock or the Captain renting those goofy bowling shoes and bowling three strings as they visited distant galaxies, going where no man has gone before.

I happened to go bowling on Friday for the first time in years and am I sore! My back, my arms, the upper parts of my legs are still sore even today. I also got very poor scores in two of my three strings but for the second game, I triumphantly bowled a 155.

FWIW. From the ST Deep Space 9 episode: "Trials and Tribble-ations", referencing TOS episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles":

Bashir: "Those are Klingons?"
Waitress: "All right. You boys have had enough."
Odo: "Mister Worf?"
Worf: "They are Klingons, and it is a long story."
O'Brien: "What happened? Some kind genetic engineering?"
Bashir: "A viral mutation?"
Worf: "We do not discuss it with outsiders."

it was touched on above and I do not remember the exact episode of Enterprise...

I do remember that it has something to do with the augments created by Dr. Singh and the Klingons attempting to create their own super-Klingons based on his work.

I remember the original episodes very well and posted the titles from TOS and DS9. I don’t think “Enterprise” touched on the storyline, however. The link I provided gives some additional insight/pov on the issue. Again, fwiw.

When he was directing himself and had to watch the footage afterwards — for example in Star Trek V — he found it really uncomfortable.

It was uncomfortable for everyone who watched it.

My understanding is Bill Shatner took one look at the scene and said, ‘No you will not! If anyone's going to be part of the first interracial kiss in television history, it's going to be me!' So they rewrote it.

Most men would be looking for an excuse to kiss Nichelle Nichols.

There was an episode in on Deep Space Nine with Worf in it where they go back in time and they use footage from the trouble with tribbles with the non bumpy headed Klingons. There is a scene in the cafeteria and one of Worfs mates who also did the time travel thing asks him about the difference and Worf just looks ready to give up and says don’t ask. If I recall the explanation given when the bumpy headed Klingons showed up in the first Star Trek movie was the old Klingons were from the southern part of the home planet and the bumpy ones from the northern part.

The Klingons got smoothe heads for TOS from Kingon doctors trying to create “augments” [Augmented Klingons] from human augment DNA - ST Enterprise, season 3 or 4

They got bumpy heads again because they cured the “augments” virus [alluded to at the end of the augment arc in ST Enterprise]

Real reason was TOS had a crappy budget and couldn’t afford the prosthetic foreheads.
