10 Brand Names Gone, But Not Forgotten
The Street via Yahoo! Finance ^ | August 16, 2011 | by Joe Mont

Old brands never die — they just fade away until someone figures a way to capitalize on the nostalgia for them.

From candy to retailers, even the biggest names can fall out of favor. Some disappear forever while others just become harder to find.

Eventually — if enough folks start playing "remember when?" — someone will take notice and try to cash in.

Remember Narragansett Beer? Rhode Island-based Narragansett Brewing opened for business in 1890. In 1981, the original Cranston brewery was closed and due to poor management by Falstaff (which had bought the brand in 1965) andproduction came to a near stand-still. In 2005, Mark Hellendrung, former president of Nantucket Nectars, along with a group of investors, bought the brand back from Falstaff

REAL Volkswagens.

The ones with the engine in the correct place, and no use for water except in the windshield washer bottle.

RIP 2004.

That was the nastiest beer on the planet!
Among widely distributed beers, I would suggest Piels or Schmidts. In a league of their own were Break Beer and Koch's Holiday Ale.

Yes, Fanta is still around. I think it’s owned by Coke. It is available in the US but particularly huge in Latin America.

As a young married couple, we owned two Beetles.

They were fun, quirky, easy to maintain, and economical.

Best of all, they were CHEAP!!!

Falstaff deserved to die. That was the nastiest beer on the planet!

Remember the generic beer in the early 80s with just a white can and a black lettered "BEER" on it. Those were manufactured by Falstaff and tasted like you had bought a case of Falstaff and left it in the trunk of your car for a week. Talk about wretched!

Two long-forgotten things - a Kodak photo booth and a Fiat 850.

I remember the Marathon candy bar when I was growing up in the 1970s. It was so long that the backside of the label had a ruler so you could do your math homework with it. I haven’t seen one of those in about 30 years. It was really chewy too - mostly caramel with a chocolate coating.

Currently made and drank but the vilest swill this sailor ever tasted.

You could embalm a corpse with that stuff.

My dad says the same thing. Of all the places he worked or consulted at throughout his extensive career, only one is still in business.

And these aren't all mom and pop shops, they include (at one time) the world's largest insurer, the largest textile manfacturer, and a few other large names.

If that ain't an example of working to live, rather than living to work, I don't know what is.

And chicklets. I hadn’t noticed they were gone

They're not. I just saw them at the dollar store last week. Peppermint, I think. Package was yellow, anyway.

Maybe the packets of the little fruity ones are gone, it's been forever since I've seen those.
