AS we celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, we reflect on the life and legacy of this great man. But recent legislation on voting reminds us that there is still work to do. Since January, a majority of state legislatures have passed or considered election-law changes that, taken together, constitute the most concerted effort to restrict the right to vote since before the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Growing up as the son of an Alabama sharecropper, I experienced Jim Crow firsthand. It was enforced by the slander of “separate but equal,” willful blindness to acts of racially motivated violence and the threat of economic retaliation. The pernicious effect of those strategies was to institutionalize second-class citizenship and restrict political participation to the majority alone.
We have come a long way since the 1960s. When the Voting Rights Act was passed, there were only 300 elected African-American officials in the United States; today there are more than 9,000, including 43 members of Congress. The 1993 National Voter Registration Act — also known as the Motor Voter Act — made it easier to register to vote, while the 2002 Help America Vote Act responded to the irregularities of the 2000 presidential race with improved election standards.

I personally think that the argument that voter ID is racist is actually racist. what is it about minorities that prevents them from obtaining FREE identification?

Yes proving you are who you are can be taxing. Rep Lewis has to show ID to get to his job on Capitol Hill as do many of us. It is not that tough to get a photo ID in fact everyone is supposed to have one. Try getting on a plane without ID that can be pretty taxing as well. It makes you want to drink Jim Beam that is Jim Crow’s cousin I think.

I personally see nothing wrong with a poll tax, nor do I see anything wrong with asking people for ID when they go to vote. It doesn’t bother me when I go to the bank, go to a teller who doesn’t recognize me and have to present ID. This is nothing more than a scam to enable voter fraud. I’ll guarantee you that if someone was giving out free money in the form of checks on presentation of ID they’d break an arm getting that ID out of their pocket. In this day and age, EVERYONE has some form of verifiable ID.
IMHO if this turd had to do an ounce of work he would say it is racist.
These clowns have made their life's work out of special rights for some at the cost of others.

Pick up a mailbox key from the US Post Office.
Get insurance
Rent an apartment
Get a job
Get a hotel room
Rent a car

You hit the nail on the head.
Only a racist would think so little of minorities and they're able to offer ID for everything from education to obtaining benefits to driving to buy alcohol to using a credit card to having bank accounts to getting a job to traveling and more but aren't worth ensuring their lawful votes are protected from dilution by illegal ballots.
Give it a break, we have to produce a freaking photo ID to use a credit card!
We also get carded if we order a beer when we go to Ruby Tuesday’s, and we both are clearly senior citizens, white hair and wrinkles.
Or to purchase cigs if that is your choice of bad habits.
A freaking photo ID is only $10 and is good for many years.
In fact I think Medicare and SS cards ought to have photo ID’s on them. Those little pieces of card stock can be counterfeited in a heart beat. And you can’t laminate them either.
