Following through on its pledge to create “a more modern, diverse DC Universe” with the New 52, DC Comics will introduce a gay teenage superhero in Teen Titans.

Series artist Brett Booth has revealed that Bunker will debut in November’s Issue 3 — he’s referred to as “The Wall” in the solicitation text — where he’s depicted as an openly gay teen from Mexico who “can create small force fields that look like bricks.” The character, whom the artist describes as “happy, fun-loving,” appears in the background in the cover of the first issue and again, more prominently, on the one for Issue 3.

“We’re trying to make being gay a part of who he is,” Booth wrote last night on Twitter.

In REAL comic books like the ones I used to collect, you got a copy for ten cents and the heroes had no sex at all.

Funny, I always thought DC’s mission was to entertain and make a profit - not dictate social understanding.

I guess DC doesn’t like making money anymore, because their movie franchise isn’t doing very well either.

I see DC comics have done a few revisions since introducing the character.

Bunker the Wall. Butch, huh? I was going to guess Twinkie the Human Sparkle, so Chris Colfer would have a chance to play a superhero.

The comic book industry today is about Liberal propaganda. Don’t let your kids read or look at comic books anymore than you would let them watch Jersey Shore.

I think the pink shirt is a bit overkill.

But yeah, I totally agree with those here that say this is giving comic book fans a reason to funnel their money elsewhere.

I fully expect, in the end, that this character will probably quietly disappear when DC looks at its sales figures.

“We’re trying to make being gay a part of who he is,” Booth wrote last night on Twitter.

And it's working. But is he Mexican or Australian? - it's confusing

History echoed in Wall's sad trade

He looks not unlike a ballroom dancer.

Narrow-waisted, in black slacks, patent leather shoes and a billowing ming blue singlet, he steps lightly from foot to foot, in and out of the shadows of the plane trees here on Darlinghurst Road, Sydney.

His name is Chris, and he is a rentboy plying his trade on this infamous 250-metre strip of inner-city bitumen known for decades as The Wall. At 32, "boy" is hardly appropriate, although in the dappled shadows he hardly looks out of his teens.

Even as he speaks to you his eyes shift constantly, his head moving about as furtively as a sparrow. "I'm waiting for a client," he confides, although he has been dancing from one side of the road to the next for more than an hour. No cars have stopped for him yet.

To understand the sex industry in Sydney you have to look not just at The Wall, ....

“can create small force fields that look like bricks.”

Better than gerbils, I suppose.

Sigh.
