Just 22% Support Government-Assisted Mortgage Payments

Most Americans still don’t believe the government should help those who can’t afford to make their mortgage payments.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 65% of American Adults think if someone can’t afford to make increased mortgage payments, they should sell their home and find a less expensive one. Twenty-two percent (22%) feel the government should assist them in making their payments, while another 13% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

These findings have changed little in surveys for several years.

The percentage of U.S. homeowners whose home is worth less than what they still owe on their mortgage has hit the highest level in nearly three years.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

The survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted on September 15-16, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Among homeowners, 69% feel those who can’t afford increased mortgage payments should sell their home and buy a less expensive one. That view is shared by just 51% of non-homeowners.

Eighty percent (80%) of Republicans and 66% of adults not affiliated with either political party would rather see the government not intervene if someone can’t afford a mortgage payment. Democrats agree but by a narrower 48% to 34% margin.

Adults under 30 are more supportive of government intervention than their elders.

Homeowners remain very pessimistic about the potential short- and long-term values of their homes.

For the fourth straight month, less than half of adults nationwide believe buying a home is the best possible investment for a family. That's well below findings dating back to 2008.

There should be a trade down program. Can’t meet your payment? Trade down. The banks have plenty of homes.

That is the same 22% that suck all the other government teats; SSI, AFDC, WIC, FI, Food Stamps, Section 8 housing, free cell phone with free minutes, free food, free clothes, paid school lunches, etc, ad nauseum. I think I'm gonna be sick.

That would make too much sense, then again if Barry promoted a “trade down” you can bet it will involve spending a lot of tax dollars spent on something useless.

I agree. Why should I, as a taxpayer, be forced to subsidize other peoples bad decisions? Beam me up, Scotty.
